Oregon special tag info
« on: June 03, 2025, 09:25:04 AM »
I have been issued a ANY Elk tag in Oregon starting 8/1/2025 to 11/30/2025 any area open to hunting any weapon. I would consider this like a raffle tag or governors tag so to speak. I'm from WA. self proclaimed elkaholic. I know there is the BIG three to hunt for the best chance at a proper bull. I want to do this tag some justice. due to the fact im 50 and not able to run the steep canyons with a sharp stick ill likely use a rifle during the hunt. (do not judge LOL) Looking to start the first 14 days in September. Please PM me any info your willing to share you think would be beneficial. I would be grateful.

Welcome to the site and that should be a fun tag. Are you after a rosie or rm?

Northeast Units would be where I would start. A lot of them are steep but given your season and being able to hunt with a rifle in august/september, you should be able to turn up a bull before the rut while still in summer mode.

There's a better spot than the Wenaha? I'll never draw that one.  Should have been putting in for points back in 2007 when I started hunting Oregon.  Oh well too late now.  Nice tag.

Congrats on the tag!! What a hunt you have there!
I would reach out to Bob Staples of Blue Mnt. Adventures or Paula Ellis at Ellis hunting Ranch. Those guys know the know when it comes to those units.

How were you issued the tag? Im more inclined to help a Disabled veteran than a rich guy. Sorry for being blunt but that's how I feel.

I'd focus on finding my bull in late July in the Walla walla or wenaha.  Start with the south fork,  yellowjacket etc.  For the Wenaha start with the Milk shakes at Indian springs and hike from there.  Bulls will still be together.  Get in shape join a gym with a stair climber in it and put your pack on.  Do the tag some justice it's probably one of the best in the country.

Sounds like good advice. Looks like Indian Springs trail head starts on wa side and it’s a several mile trail hike to the milk shakes is that correct ?

If you find a whopper but he is in a nasty spot, shoot me a message. I can take a day off work and come help you pack it out

I know some draws in the Walla Walla unit that hold big bulls. It's quite the hike down to them and doable hike up if you can ride in on a dirt bike. I can send some pins in a PM.
I hunt therefore I am.
