E scouting for bears
« on: June 24, 2025, 02:14:25 PM »
Ive been researching and looking at spots online to go and chase bears and hopefully get my first this August, i've been targeting areas about 4000-6000, i’ve been looking for avalanche chutes and meadows and looking at a couple basins that i think could be good, i’m planning to get out this weekend and do some backpacking in the area. My question is if there’s anything else i should be looking for when i’m doing my e scouting is there any certain terrains you find bears in more frequently or am I on the right track with what i'm doing?

North facing slopes. Find the berries, find the bears. Bears can be anywhere, from sea level to the top of the cascades. You're on the right track though, just having boots on the ground and days in the woods, you will find them

Don’t really need to e scout.  Bears are on every mountain and in every valley essentially. Just follow the berries.   Doesn’t really pay to scout for animals in advance because they’ll move as the berries ripen.

I agree. Not much need to escout. I mean find some 4500-5000' elevations. Nice TH to get to top. Peel off the trail. Don't even need to be to far grind hiking trails. Find berries and glas the basins.

Most important thing for hunting in alpine i would say is time and patienc. You either get spoiled and see bear on first day or slog it out for 5days.. Be ready to glass all day long. Bears cruise around and in my observation are always on the go.

They'll pop their heads up when you least expect it. Up in high county be able to shoot out to as far as you feel comfortable. You get opportunity's at short range and long range. My goal is to be able to poke out to 500-600yds. I've seen many bear at this distance and if I was more confident I'd taken the shot.

Be prepared to see bears where your not glassing. Like hiking down the trail or in random spots where you're not thinking they'll be. Also try to still hunt the timber. Bears are loud. They breathe heavy and noisy.

Good luck you'll have no problem getting one. Just find feed and they'll be there. Late September is my go to.

I'm gonna say it never hurts to e-scout.
With that said , you'll never see berries from ONX.
If your "exploring" or heading someplace new,I'd use similar e-scout tactics that you would use for any animal.
One of my favorite sayings.
"You find them ,where you find them" kinda rings true with bear.

Basically just drop some pins, then go check it out boots on the ground. Cover some ground. 👍
If there was magic features on ONX,or certain stuff to look for as it pertaining to bear hunting. E-scouting today is more secret stuff that nobody will spill the beans.

Hiking trail reports and photos can help put you in the right area. Lots of reports will even say if there is ripe berries.

Just follow those food storage signs at trail head.
Plenty of bears in those areas .
