Calling in August in Western Washington
« on: July 15, 2025, 06:44:50 PM »
Curious how many of you have had success calling in bears in August (or early season in general).  Are bears paying attention to calls then or just chowing on berries and not needing to work for a food source?

If so, what type of calls are you using?

Anyone want to guess what percentage of bears are shot with the use of calls versus spot/stalking? I'd love to know that actual number...

I only call when I’ve got super fresh sign and I’m an area to thick to glass or to just wait for them to show up. I do a lot of predator calling, but I’ve definitely had better luck in fall with glassing and or still hunting/ ambush.

Well I spent a few hours out scouting in Skagit and did not see many berrys ripe yet.

Salmon berries were ripe around 1500 ft. But saw no Hucks or Blue Berries. Went up to 4800 ft.

I plan to try calling first in early season.

I90 corridor 've seen salmon berries come and go already, raspberries are close to done, but there are a lot of little red berries, red huckleberries, trailing blackberries , and those fuzzy red berries are going strong.  No shortage of berries from what I have seen -- all at foothills elevation
