Springfield 1898 30-40 KRAG
« on: Yesterday at 07:20:07 PM »
What say you about this rifle. Research tells me according to ser# it was made in 1898-99. Seems to be in original condition, albeit not the best condition.
Wanting to shoot it, but a bit sketched to do so.  :chuckle:
Any idea on its value?

Find a gunsmith to look it over. 1898-99 is in the smokeless smokeless area. Gunbroker or Gun Values Board might be a good place to start for a value. The bayonet should add something to the value.

Its a cool looking gun for sure with the bayonet. Online some of them have a sheath for it, also hard to tell condition of them.....I guess for a gun that old most are going to have some wear and tear. This one in particular lived on the coast so the sling has what appears to be mold (white powdery substance) on it, steel all looks pretty good, wood has some dings.

After 120 years who doesn’t have a few dings. :chuckle: If you haven’t done so already, give it a thorough cleaning and visual inspection. Then do a function test with just a case and primer, no powder or bullet. Just to make sure it will even fire, then take it to a smith for inspection.

I'd have a gunsmith check it out, but it should be good to go.  They're tough old guns.  The first large caliber rifle I ever fired was my gandpa's 30-40 Krag.  Fond memories there... :)

I've have a falling-block 1863 Peabody 45-70 with bayonet, sheath, and belt hook.  Had a gunsmith look it over several years ago and fire it.  I haven't fired it since.  I was too young to shoot it when Dad and older brothers were shooting cats and rats in the village dump in the late 50's.  Heavy at the front with the bayonet mounted.

When I obtained a WWII era .303 Enfield.......I cleaned it up, eyeballed it, loaded and ejected a few rounds.......everything looked OK and worked smoothly. So, off to the woods.......I loaded a round, placed a Lead Sled on the ground, put the Enfield in the rest, aimed it at a dirt berm.....then attached a length of para-cord to the trigger, stepped back and to the side and pulled the cord.....worked just fine.
