Got the Rio.  Now for the last one,  the Eastern.  This will be no fun but it's got to be done.

Got a hard earned Kittitas County bird this last week. Tom was desperate for some love. My buddy located him from down ridge with a crow call. We worked ourselves in position above him and did one more locate call. He sounded even closer now and just down ridge from us. We set up decoys and within 5 minutes of calling, he emerged from the brush maybe 25-30 yards in front of me. Some TSS 9 shot sent him home to the ole dirt roost.

I tagged out this morning after sitting tight through the lightning... probably not one of my smartest moments.

Took me two hours to call this one in. He was gobbling on a ridge above me and wouldn't move. I finally convinced him that he wanted what I had.

By far the most improbable bird I have and ever will take in my life. If I would of put the kill odds on this one after his first gobble I would have said 1%.

To summarize I had to hit spot number 2 this morning since the original plan was a bust of all busts. Got up to a high point in the clear cut and let out some loud calls which got me an almost whisper of a gobble back. Looking at OnX i had him judged at 600 yards+ down the clear cut, across the swamp and up the other side. Thought, welp i may as well sit here and have a snack because that's the only turkey i'll most likely be eating today. For context - i was sandwiched (pun intended) between two pieces of private property so I couldn't go any further to him, i was at the end of the line as far as my public access was concerned so i had to either call him to me or go somewhere else.

I kept throwing out occasional calls and to my surprise he kept answering me but still way too far away to get me interested. Halfway into my snack (5 ish mins), i heard him pop off again and this time he was much closer and almost sounded like he was entering the swamp. Getting mildly more interested but still pessimistic about my odds i said to myself 'there's no way he closes beyond that swamp'. another 5 mins goes by with a few calls in between and i can now see him emerge from the treeline, he had closed 300 yards, crossed the swamp and was out in the open looking for me. WTF is happening i said to myself...i threw out my decoy on the logging road i was on and jumped in the bushes on the other side of the road.

This time in my head was truly where everything would bust, sure he came 300 yards and crossed the swamp but there's no way he's going to climb the 300 vertical feet up the clearcut i was in was he? Was he truly that love struck?

Another 5 mins goes by in which i'm contemplating the current situation and up pops this turkey head at 40 yards. No freaking way.....my guy had closed 600+ yards, crossed the swamp and climbed 300 vertical feet up to my position on the clear cut and was full strut as soon as he came over the hill.

Well obviously i had to close out this fairy tail so people would actually believe it by letting my grandpas old 870 express close the last page of the book.

I have no explanation other than the Lord almighty saw my struggles and decided to throw me a bone because i can take zero credit for anything else that happened in that scenario haha however i will gladly accept my bone and take it home to the smoker.

Cheers all!
Travis

That one is exactly the kind all of us look for day in and day out!  Congrats!  Neither of mine were interested in coming to me, luckily their lady friends decided they wanted to swing by and drug them with them.

I got my favorite bird ever today, it also happens to be one of my biggest if not the biggest. What made this special, my son (7) was with me and watched the arrow hit. I used a “Dirty Bird” broadhead given to me by Brushcrawler with a note that said step up your game. Long story short, they work at 20 yards.

My son can’t stop talking about it and now has a pile of feathers, paper and tape all over his desk making art projects.
