Antler velvet preservation question
« on: May 21, 2026, 04:17:38 PM »
Keeping this short, i have a depredation tag for a bull elk. Obviously at this time bulls are still pretty early on in their antler development. so I'm curious if its possible to preserve them with just a regular antler preservative despite still being soft? or are there additional steps i should take?

personally more of a meat hunt for me, and kinda ridiculous to want to preserve antlers in this state (If they survive from the elk tipping over), but i probably wont have the opportunity to take a big bull again in my lifetime, if not a very long way down the line.

Velvet Antler Technologies makes a spray called Velvalok that I've used on deer in velvet and they've held up great.

I was with a tribal member when he shot a buck in velvet in early August... They were white mushy with blood under it when I stripped some velvet... He tossed the head later saying they'll just rot...
I love you... I really do...

I was looking into that! Though for a late may-June bull, I'm just not sure how it would hold up since the antlers are soft and still growing.

With antlers that early in the season you need to have them freeze dried. The velvetlok really only works on late august/early September velvet where there isn't much blood

If it was a deer, just throw the antlers in the freezer, hard to do with elk antlers.  Have a mounted whitetail set that my stepson killed probably 30 years ago.  They were put in the freezer for 6 months, maybe, don't really know, but they are pristine still.

I used borax on a bow kill deer one year
Covered them for a month
Blew it off with an air hose
25 years and looks fine
