Favorite cow call

Season is getting close. Practicing every day. I'm driving everyone at work crazy with my diaphram calls. I don't dare use it one more time around my wife or she will be the one killing me. Just curious what everyones favorite cow call is? By the way, if you cow call and your wife looks at you, DO NOT SAY "it worked"

I have two, diaphragm calls and my killer call, the single reed call. This reed call makes a great estres sound which can really seal the deal.

 It seems to me that over the last several seasons the elk have gone QUIET, I dont mean that they are not talking it is just VERY softly. Any call that you can control volume with is preferrable to the ones that require a lot of force to use or the push-button ones suck. (Hoochie momma) I had good success with the MacDaddy useing the cow call cover and enclosing it in my hand. You might not think it is loud enough, but you will be surprised at how good elk can hear. I can barely hear it myself and my partner about 30 yards away doesnt hear it but elk came in to check us out a bunch of times. I passed on several nice bulls sneaking in to see where that soft speaking cutie was and If I wasnt trying for a specific bull we would have both tagged out.

I am ... I mean, I use a "Sleazy"  it works like a dream.  Have had cows almost run over me to get to the call.

I still really like "The Original Cow Talk".  It is that gray plastic one with the black rubber bands.  That was the very first cow call we used and we called in a huge bull the first time we used it. 

It was pretty funny we had been hunting hard all morning and could see there was fresh sign of a herd but hadnt seen anything.  We stopped for a break inside some heavy timber.  So while we are sitting there, we were talking quietly, my dad was smoking, I think we were digging in our packs for a snack and my dad pulls this call out of his pocket.  It is still in the package so he reads the back and gets it out.  He blows on it like the package says and we all start laughing at the sound.  We had never heard anything so stupid sounding.  We thought no way is that what a cow elk is supposed to sound like.  It wasnt even very loud.  He tries again and actually says out loud, "I think Im gonna get my money back".  Just then we hear a cow answer.  We all look at each other and then all hell breaks loose.  About 50 yard away a twenty foot alder sapling comes crashing to the ground and springs back up, then goes down again.  We are freaked out.  It was a big 6x6 with a herd of cows and they were coming right at us.  My dads tells us to get down and he gets ready to get a shot.  This is the first time I have ever seen anyone get "buck fever".  He was shaking so bad he couldnt get his bow pulled back.  The bull is coming closer but the trees are to close together.  My dad is only seeing him through these little gaps in the trees.  He finally gets the bow back and has one bigger window that the bull is heading for.  The cows are coming with him and wouldnt you know it one of them gets between my dad and the bull.  My dad is shaking so bad waiting for his shot to open up and holding the back the bow that when the shot finally opens up on the next little window between the trees he misses and hits a tree.  The elk bolt.  My dad sinks to his knees shaking.  All of our hearts are pounding right out of our chests.  After a few minutes my dad looks over to us and starts laughing.  It was one of the craziest things that has ever happened to us while elk hunting.

Anyways the "The Original Cow Talk" works.  I also really like the Sceery "The Special" call.

For my primary calls I like to use the Primos Sonic Dome Triple mouth reed call or their new "IMAKADABULLCRAZY" call.   For a secondary call to make it sound like there's more than one elk I will supplement these calls with a hoochie mamma call.  Which despite what some say works great.  If you use it properly.

Mellow Yellow is probably the easiest mouth diaphrams to master.  It's my go to cow call during the rut.  Called in numerous bulls and cows with this call from Rocky Jacobsen.

I've had good luck with the Primos white single reed call; I think they call it the Ivory Plate Single.  For whatever reason I can make all the calls I need from cow calls to raghorn or spike squeals.  The mouth calls don't make the best nasally esterous calls, so for that I use the Carlton Esterous Whine.

Its hard to get the cadence right on here.   I usually use a bit softer of a call when actually out tipping.

LOL Bone!  I like the mellow yellow reed from Rocky and the white reed (ivory plate) from Primos... I have had much better response from these two than any other reeds in the line up.  The hoochie mama and estrus whine calls have their place but shouldn't be relied on solely.  I know the hoochie mama gets a lot of bad pub on this site but it has been effective part of my calling especially when it is used to supplement reeds to create "herd" talk.

Oh and the Elknut's chuckler is very effective when used with the right reed...  definitely check it out.

I'm all about the softer single reed diaphrams.  My favorites are the Primos Ivory Plate and the mellow yellow and raging bull diaphrams by Rocky.

Once I stopped laughuing at Boneaddict's post I was able to remember that I favor my Primos reed. I don't know which one it is but It sounds good and the elk like it.

By far my favorite call, I can get the softest calf calk and still a great reed to bugle with.

just pick up the mellow yellow call  days ago never used a reed call before. great thing was it only took me a couple of hours to learn how the use it. it will definetly be with me this elk season.
