I am helping my oldest son get going with his first muzzleloader. He will be mostly elk hunting with it. We got him the Knight Wolverine with the 22" Barrel. He is used to a .338 Win so recoil is not an issue.

We would like to set it up with the heaviest load that is reasonably accurate. The manual calls for 90 to 150 grains of powder with 150 grains being the maximum load. We are leaning toward a 300 grain sabboted projectile, probably Hornady.

I would like to hear your experiences with developing a reasonably accurate heavy load.

Thanks!

Most accurate load on my Bighorn is 95gr. of loose T7 fffg, 290gr. Barnes Spit-fire T-EZ load flat base and CCI musket caps. Remember if you use FFFG powder you have to reduce the load due to it being a finer grain!!!!!
My rifle had a hard time loading Hornady sabots but I guess you could try and see.

Triple 7 in general has to be used in a lesser amount than other powders.  An 85 gr. load of triple 7 I believe, is equivalent to 100 grs. of black or pyrodex.  One needs to be careful not to overcharge.

We shoot 100 to 110 grains T7 in FFG or FFFG behind a 360 grain Extreme boat tail sabot, or a 375 grain Buffalo SSB if you can find them. Touch it off with a #11 or Musket cap. Velocity is maybe 80 fps faster with the FFFG than the FFG. Musket caps make an almost unmeasureable difference in velocity.

4 guys in our camp have the Wolverine/Bighorns with the 28" tubes and one guy shoots a TC Black diamond.

With the 22" tube you shoul probably reduce the load to ~90 grains or so. Not sure a 22" tube could fully utilize 100+ grains. Might just be making a flame thrower.

We get around 1550 to 1580 fps if I remember right. Havent shot across the chrono in a few years.
