Quail recall pen
« on: July 24, 2009, 02:42:49 PM »
Hey everyone, I was wondering if any of you had experience with them, and if so may be some plans for them as well. My sister just got a new pup back in WI and asked if I could find some info on them for her. Appreciate any insight on them.

adam.WI yahoo or google "quail johnny houses." There is a lot of information out there if you can find it. I went on to sites dedicated for dogs and looked at everyones plans before I built mine. I saw everything from 55 gallon blue barrels, wire cages, and homemade contraptions. I built one from scrap that I had laying around. If I can find my camera I will post pictures some pictures of it. One thing that I found is that you have to have a call bird for them to return. I would let all of mine out at once and they would recall, but after a while they might roost outside next to the johnny house, the next day somewhere else, and then they might not return at all. Having one bird dedicated to recalling would always bring them back or you might be able to find an electronic recall somewhere. The other problem that I had was hawks. They would wait for me to release them and swoop down and take one before I even knew it. Check out this link to Lion Country Supply http://www.lcsupply.com/index.php?page=products&persist=yes&showAll=yes. They have plans here for a Johnny House and mine basically looks like this one. Good luck.

thanks for the reply, I've looked at the johnny house, but couldn't find the dimensions of the funnel. (which is all I really need) I feel the rest is what ever you make it. The vertical flight of the johnny does seem to be a good idea though. thanks again
