HELP ME PLEASE!! HUNTING ON WHIDBEY ISLAND?
« on: August 06, 2009, 08:02:03 PM »
I am new to this site.  I am 27 and in the Navy.  I am trying to find out where I can bow hunt on Whidbey Island.  I live about 10 min. south of Coupeville.  I  have found some public land but not much.  If anyone could point in the right direction I would really appreciate it.  I know I'm not the first to ask  Thanks!

Have you checked with the game warden's office on NAS Whidbey (main installation off of Ault Field)?  They have public hunting land near the airstation (where the gas station and big PX is) off of Crescent Harbor Rd.  If I remember correctly, you'll need your hunting license and a permit from the base.  When I was younger you could hunt deer out there.  They still release pheasants every year too.  Can't support a population out there, too wet.  Unfortunately, Whidbey's mostly private land owned by tree huggers...good luck.  Semper Fi!

How's it going?  You and I must be neighbors!  I live about 10 minutes south of coupeville too.  Just off of Race Rd.  There isn't too much public land, but I know there is some somewhere because there is always a big push by the hippies that moved up from california to ban hunting on the island.  I'm in Afghanistan right now, but will be home just in time for the late rifle hunt on the Peninsula if you want to tag along.  My hunting partner transfered away so I've been on my own the last few years.  I prefer to hunt alone during the day, but it's nice to have someone to BS with at night.  We could split the gas and whatnot.

Only upland and waterfowl on base... they did away with the deer hunting 8-10 years ago.  Not much public land but you can knock on some doors and if you approach it right get permission.  Lots of tree huggers here but some farmers want hunters to hunt their property.  PM me and I'll give you some ideas... Were you out fishing for humpies yesterday with Brotemarkle?

Patton1 - also there is a archery club here and you can get hooked up with some people there who have been here for a long time and can help you out.  whidbeybowmen.com   check it out.

I live in Teronda West if you know where that is.  Definitely have to get together when you get back from Afghanistan.  I like to hunt by myself too but it's always nice to have someone to BS about hunting with after the hunt.  I gotta get off here for the night.  I'll see you on here later.  thanks everyone for the replies.

You seem to be doing fine. The only thing different you could do is to quote whatever post it is that you are replying to. Sometimes you'll want to do that, sometimes not, just so it is more clear who you are responding to.

dnr has maps of the island, thats where i would start as it will show you all the public land
No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders.

Wonder where that 120 acres is and how much deer is on there?  It's tempting to have 120 acres to roam around on.  But then again I could sit on my 5 acres for free and shoot virtually the same deer.   :dunno:  Plus, I haven't really shot my bow in about 3 years.  With that long of a season though, over a month, I would have time to sharpen up the skills.  Probably just stick with the rifle hunt again this year.  I'm going to shore duty after this deployment and will have all spring and summer to tune for the bow season if I want to go that route. Choices, choices, choices.
