Cabela's Customer Service!
« on: August 20, 2009, 10:41:30 PM »
This is why I continue to shop at Cabela's.  I will try to make this short, although it was a long day for me yesterday.  I planned on stopping by the range to just shoot my Model 70 Winchester (325 WSM) to make sure it was still shooting straight.  I leave in about 2 1/2 weeks for a moose hunting trip to Alaska with my cousin.  He has the rifle case for the flights and I am headed to Vancouver this weekend, taking my rifle down to him to pack.  I bought the rifle about a year ago, used at Cabela's.  Since sighting it in last year, this was the first I had shot it.  After one shot, the bolt won't open.  When I finally get it open, it does not extract the spent casing, but I do get a small piece of metal to fall out.  It's is the extractor on the bolt, that has broken off.  After calling Cabela's they say their standard warranty on used guns is 30 days, but if I go to this gun smith that they recommend, they will split the cost with me.  I call the gun smith and head to Tacoma.  To fix the extractor (due to shop minimun) with be $70-80 total (splitting the cost, not so bad).  The next problem, the spent case, still in the gun, will not come out easily.  Once the case does come out, it is in bad shape.  The gun smith looks in the barrel and it looks ok, but the chamber is in horrible shape.  It is pitted very bad, and he said it looks like part of the metal is actually peeling away.  The gun needs a new barrel.  I call Cabala's again.  The Gun Library Manager says "bring it in, we will give you your money back."  I head to Lacey.  They give me the full purchase price, plus tax.

Now I need a new gun.  I decide to stay with the 325 WSM.  I like the caliber, and I have 3 boxes of ammo ($150 worth).  I narrow the search to the Browning X-Bolt and the Kimber Montana.  These are the two I wanted all along, but came across the Model 70 at a good price (now I know why).  I love the Kimber, but it is expensive, but Cabela's has it on closeout for $950.  The Bolt is $900.  They will have to ship it in from another store ( no cost to me, Cabela's is picking up the UPS).  With my refund and Cabela's points, and only $150 out of pocket, I will have my Kimber Montana next week sometime.  That will give me about 1-1 1/2 weeks to get i sighted in and ready to head to Alaska for moose (and hopefully wolves).  They did not have to do that on a used gun, but they did.  And next time I decide on a certain gun, I will not settle for anything else, just because it is a "good deal"

Sorry.  I did not keep it short.

Looks like you got what you really wanted after all.  Isn't it weird how everything seems to work itself out?  You must have good karma. ;)

My wife is a little skeptical of the whole story.  I just told her that I'm not smart enough to make that story up.  Honest!

I can't wait.  We have been planning this trip for two years now.  Almost two weeks in the field and about 60 miles of river to float.  From what we've heard, we should see very few other people on the river.  The fewer people, the better.  The next two weeks will not go by fast enough (except for the fact that my new rifle needs to come in, and I need to get it sighted in).

I CAN NOT WAIT!

good luck on your moose hunt up there, it is an awesome place to hunt, nothing better than a big bull moose grunting his way in. Are you guys going to be calling for them?

Amazing story!  Thanks for sharing. I've had many good outcomes in dealing with returns from Cabela's.  I can't wait to hear the real story on how you got the big one !

We will be doing some calling.  Last year they had warm weather, and the rut was late.  Hopefully we will get them rutting hard.  I would love to be able to call one in close.  I will be sure to post  the story and pictures when I return.

Did I mention that I can't wait!

Cabelas's is great and their service is the best.

Great choice on the Kimber.  You will not regret it. They are amazing rifles.  I own 4 of them and 1 pistol and do not have a single complaint!  They are the closest thing you can get to a custom gun from a production company.  The couple extra dollars you spent is well worth the almost 2 pounds of weight you save from other rifles. They are a dream to pack in the woods and already have a great trigger.  I have quite a few rifles in my safe and every year I say I'm going to hunt with a different one, and every year I open the safe and look through them and grab my Kimber M84 in .243.  I've killed 12 deer with it and just feel confident it will always do what I need it to do.  I kind of got off the subject of Cabela's but had to say great choice on the Kimber.

I had thought about the .243 as my next rifle.  It would fill the gap between the .22 and .308.  I thought it would be a great caliber for deer and antelope, and I could use it for predator hunting as well.

I should get the call that my Kimber is in either today, or tomorrow.  I can't wait to get it to the range, and then to Alaska!

Picked my Kimber Montana up today.  Scope mounted and bore sighted.  The gun feels sweet.  Can't wait to get to the range.  Probably early next week.  Need my back healed up a little more.  I leave one week from this next Monday.  Nothing like coming down to the wire (for sighting in the rifle and getting my back healed up).

Alaska, hear I come!
