Just playing around with the Nikon D50

Rebecca came up with a couple of ideas and I was needing things to practice on here's her idea

I think those in black and white with some contrast to help bring out the barn wood grain would give those a different look.

A Nikon D50 huh?  I like the clarity. More info on the particular lens and exposure settings please. Take that hunting boot out and toss in a pair of rough cowboy boots with spurs in, and you've got a 'period' photo.  Fence boards, pole, some wire, all you're missing is a scabard, saddle and some tack.

I don't know about the antique wash.. I think that true Black and White would also be very nice.  Can you do that with the new camera's or do you use software after the shot?

Steve I don't know if I can do it on the camera or not I'm just learning how to operate this SLR my other camera is a Kodak Z812 point and shoot so I still got a long ways to go figuring out what this D50 is really capable of. But I can change it to B&W with post processing what ya think?

Sepia. My "antique" leaves a fair amount of the original colors.

Here's a pic my 11 year old stepdaughter took - I applied the "Antique" effect to it.  Notice it leaves muted, washed out shades of the original colors.  (below it is the original version)

Ah,... So many changes since letting the paper sit in some D76 for a little longer...

I used to play with film. Canon AE1/Nikon F1 in the late 70's. For the still shots.. Tripod, Manual mode. Set my shutter speed, set my aperature, manual focus. Wait.. Wait... Wait for just the lighting that I wanted from the sun or supliment with anything from an open globe to the one burnt out headlight from a 67' Mustang. Then I played in the dark room for effect.

Seems so much easier these days. All it takes is a spendy digital and you instantly know the result by looking at the display. Delete if you don't like it and try again. I used to wait days before I knew how my shots turned out.

Alas, I would love to have one of the ever capabable new digitals, but is the ART and learn'ed skill of photography being lost?

NikonD50 and Lovemylabxs seem to take nice pix though..

Steve I think I'll take that as a compliment. Yea I guess it is instant gradification now adays but I like you use to have a canon AE1 35mm film camera till some jerk stole it off my bike  but I ended up getting a hand me down sony that used the 3-1/2" disk for my first diggy camera and then upgraded to the Kodak Z812 and finally ran into a good deal on the D50.   I might show my age a little when i say my first car in the mid 60s had a 4track tape player then I upgraded to a 8track then cassette (still don't have a CD player in my rig but do in the house) but I do still try to set up a shot for a desired outcome. I did set up this shot to get the setting sun at my back but just like a 35mm film I did play with F stops and shutter speeds to get the effect I was looking for more or less I just didn't have to spend a lot of money on prints that I didn't want. I also have photoshop but I don't know how to use it yet. All I did on the B&W was used a Microsoft program on the computer to desaturate to B&W.

I guess I like some of the new stuff but if you notice those two rifles neither have scopes and they are my hunting firearms especially the Hawkins and hopefully this year it'll put some backstrap in the freezer.
