Meat Hunting In Sequim
« on: September 14, 2009, 02:35:48 PM »
I went hunting up at the Diamond Point Airport this weekend and it is a meat hunt. The deer are almost tame there but they like to hang out on the runway so they are trying to thin the herd out. Must be atleast 30 - 40 of em'. You must hunt in small areas and archery only. I did not see any bucks just alot of does but they prefer you shoot a doe anyway.

You must contact a guy named Ernie at 360-808-1858 and he will put you on the very short list as they only let 2-4 people at a time in there. You will get a map as well as written permission to hunt private property.

The only bad thing is lots of the people there love their deer and will harass you every chance they get. Ignore them as most of them are not even homeowners. This would be a perfect spot to go if you have kids looking for the first deer.Good luck and keep us posted if you get one. I have a buddy on here that got one there Sunday and i will have him post pics.

If you hunt this spot there are deer around all day but sunrise and sunset see herds of them right out in  the open. Ask around the houses on the runway about shooting in their yards as most of them want the deer gone.
The only person who has failed is the one who never tried.

Sounds like you had a good trip. Lots of deer up there is an understatement and there are some good bucks around but like you said they prefer you to take the does out, don't thinkthey would complain either way though.

Yeah but if it's getting down towards the end of the season and your freezer is empty it would be a good option!  Thus the "Meat Hunt" title..  Thanks for the info Seansfire.  Hope someone takes advantage of it!

It will be allowed during late season also. It is open with weapon restrictions during the general season also fo the rifle hunters.

It's in the Coyle Unit, I think it's just barely still in Clallam County, so it's shotgun only for modern firearm.

Might call him for late season. Thanks! I already passed up two freezer fillers, but who knows what the late season will bring.

The anti neighbors are always a problem, there's a neighborhood I could take you to and see deer any time of any day of the week. EVERY TIME! Some nice bucks too. They figure there's over 200 deer on 120 acres. Most residents of that neighborhood hate them, but the neighbors who see them as pets are the problem... make it almost not worth the trouble. Diamond Point is similar, lots of former Californians.

There are a few out at Diamond point who feed them and look at them as pets but like you said the majority hate them. My parents have a house looking over the airstrip and the deer eat everything. I may go up during late season and get a freezer filler also. Just depends on how much time I have to go chase big bucks down this way.
