GNP Moose Pics/Videos
« on: September 20, 2009, 12:59:05 AM »
My recent trip to Glacier National Park was one of the best moose trips I have ever had.  I have never seen so many moose at one time, let alone got so many good picture opportunities of them.  If you listen carefully in some of the videos, you will hear elk bugling in the background.  The elk would answer me when I bugled them, but nothing got them as riled up as a bull moose grunting.  I took literally hundreds of pictures of moose, here are some of my favorites as well as many videos (I have more to upload later as well).

I was blessed to see a cow and a calf as well as a lone cow many times throughout the trip. Here are some of the better pictures of cows and calves.  I one time had the calf run by me through the water at less than 2 feet, I got wet from the splashes.

There are also three bulls in the area.  I only got pictures of two of them, luckily, the one I did not see was only a spike.  Both bulls were rutting and grunting the entire week.  The smaller of the two was constantly following cows around and trying to court them.  The cows always turned them down.  I had both bulls walk by me at less than 15 yards.

Here are the pics of the smaller bull:

**More videos to come soon**

I also got some great pictures of a really nice bull one day.  He came out to the lake grunting the whole way and just walked right by us and across the lake.  He really got the bull elk riled up.  One of the elk kept bugling and grunting at him from in the trees, unluckily he never came out into the open.  I know nothing about scoring moose, what does this big guy score?  What about the smaller bull for comparison?

Holy cow Shane, way to score with some moose action! Those pics and videos are awesome.
I would say that big guy easily makes Boone & Crockett. My estimate is 50+ wide and without adding any numbers in my head, at least 170 B&C. Some others on this site are pretty good at judging moose.

Shane, amazing opportunity.  I spent a week in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons looking for a moose and I just got back from Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Kootenei, and Mt. Robson Parks and didn't see one moose in a week.  Great photos and video.  I really like the one with the bull in the lake with the mist coming off the lake.  Good stuff.   :)

Well you missed out on Glacier.  Our last full day there we saw 10 moose and 10 bears including a grizz w/ 3 cubs!  It was awesome!  Can't wait to see pics from your trip!

Great videos and photos.  That looks like a heck of a trip.  I sure hope you drive a little hybrid, because your gas bill must be crazy.  Do it while you can, that's for sure.  Thanks for sharing these Shane.

Definitely not driving a hybrid, but when the gas bill is over half the expense of the trip it can be a good thing or a bad thing (either gas is too expensive or your trip is really cheap).  In our case our trip was cheap enough that everything worked out well!
