first archey elk
« on: September 20, 2009, 09:51:27 AM »
Filled my tag on a cow in bumping this past week. I had a any bull tag but after not having heard or seen a bull for the last two days I decided to fill the tag and put some meat in the freezer with a fat cow. 35 yards broadside at 6:45 am. It was a steep hillside that I had seen elk on every day that I had hunted it. The elk usually where coming up the hill in the morning to bed down. My camp was at the top and I had planned to dive off and meet them partway up like I had on a couple of other mornings. Well they had gotten an early start and were near the top. I shot the cow and down hill she went. I was hoping that she would run farther than she did as there are roads below. She didnt go far before piling up. A fellow hunter that was camped at the same spot as myself helped the entire day forgoing his evening hunt in the bethel unit. We dragged her down hill and quartered her up for the pack out. It took until close to 6:00 pm to get back to camp with everything. All in all I learned alot about elk hunting this year. I had previously only done ML for elk. I learned more this year than the rest combined. Very satisfying season. Unfortunately I did not pack a little camera with me so did not get any picks of the animal.
