Question for the pros.

Does it ruin or lessen the commercial value of a photo if you post it on a website?  In other words, if I stumble on "the shot" will the publisher only be interested in the pic if its never been posted on the web, even if only a web sized version?  Just wondering, I'm still waiting for that perfect shot.
