Hi all,
I'm wanting to buy a good quality semi auto handgun ( 9mm or 40cal ) And would like to hear some of your opinions. I owned a ruger 9mm years ago ( I think it was a p89..) and got rid of it because of the long trigger throw. But I do miss target shooting with a semi auto.

If you got rid of the ruger because of long trigger throw, I wouldnt go with a glock. I know Bullseye in tacoma will let you shoot nearly any gun in their rental case for like 5 bucks.

Glock is a good one.  Browning Hi-Power 9mm is another excellent choice.  I'm sure there are many different preferences.  I would suggest going to a Gun shop that has a shooting range and try some different ones if you can.

How about the well established and proven 1911, only in 40 or 9mm.  For effect, I'd go with 40, for target and fun and cheaper ammo, go with 9mm.  What do you want to do with this gun?  Doesn't matter really, the 1911 has done it all on all top levels.    I'm a fan of the 1911 BTW, own several others, but if you didn't like the rugers trigger, a glock might not be so great for you, mind though, I think glock has a better trigger than the rugers in thier larger autos.   A High-Power is also a good option, or heck, I could name off several pistols, but thats like recommending a pair of shoes to someone, depends what fits you best and fills your need for it's intended use. Lots of great choices out there.

I used to have the Ruger p89 in 9mm. I sold it and bought a para-ordnance p12 in .45. I noticed right away that I shot way better with the para than the ruger. I don't know if its the trigger or fit or what, but a much nicer gun all around. The para is a 1911 based gun.

I put a few rounds through a friends S&W 40 cal ( I believe it was a mod. 410s), and was really pleased with it.  Fun gun to shoot and pretty accurate as well.

Pretty much EVERY manufacturer makes a 1911 style gun. This is my favorite style of semi-auto

Don't rule out the Springfield XD. The trigger is way nicer than my Ruger 9mm.

1911 has been one of those american legend gun. like a classy lever action or something. fits most peoples hands as well.

Depend on what you like.  Glock is the most corrosion resistant black gun around.  Glock is super easy to shoot and has a trigger pull less the half the length of any Dbl/Single other then the Para LDA.  Glock does not have a safety (regardless of what they claim) and will go bang every time you pull the trigger.  Smith Autos are junk unless they come from the custom shop (IMO), and most have a mag disconnect just like the Browing.  1911's are a great gun as long as you get a known manufacturer.  I don't like a 1911 grip without a arched main spring and fatter grips.  No I don't have huge hands just little girly hands.  P-Series Rugers are tanks to handle, but shoot actually pretty good in the accuracy department.  HK are nice but feel top heavy to me.  Shot a Springfield XD45 and that is a really nice gun in the hand, recoil, accuracy, metal mags, grip safety,  dang nice gun.  Find one that fits your hand the best then shoot them.  Recoil is so different for each gun. 1911's seem to flip more for me, and I love my Glock 10mm with full power loads.  No wimpy FBI downloads because they can't shoot for me.

The XD45 is a sweet looking gun..That's defiantly one I'm going to have to shoot..

Springfield XD-40 or XD-45; with a polymar lower  frame and stainless barrel/slide configuration; THAT is the better choice than the Glock for rust prevention and the overall gun has a better features.

Also, look at the Magnum Research/ Desert Eagle in 45ACP or 40S&W.

My pref is the Glock 19 in 9mm, my high-capacity clip weighs as much as the gun so I tend to carry it alot, I also have a stainless 380 llama thats a nice small frame carry gun, I have the 1911 Colt 45 its big its heavy and for some reason I can not hit crap with it over 20 yds

Might want to take a look at the SW 1911, can not beat their workmanship or customer service. That will be my first 1911, hopefuly sometime this next year.
