Huckleberry Muzzleloader Buck 09
« on: September 28, 2009, 02:38:25 PM »
Here's the story on this....Got into the tree stand around 3:30. It was almost 80 degrees and I had quite a sweat going from hiking to the stand. At first the wind was perfect right in my face, then it started to swirl. The tree was moving back and swaying all around. I considered leaving but it was early enough in the day I was hoping that the wind would die down. Luckily, it did. At 6:40 p.m. I see this deer appear out of no where. He is moving down the trail towards me as I hoped. I could see that he was a decent buck and my heart started racing. I got my gun in position and then he looked up and stared at me for 3-4 minutes. I think the face paint saved me. It was a game of poker and I just froze and did not move. He then turned and walked another 10 yards and stopped behind a 8-10 foot pine tree. All I could see was a little white patch from his front leg. I waited and waited. I could see my watch and I glanced at it when he first went behind the tree. Well he stood right there not moving for 15 minutes. After 7-8 minutes I started thinking he gave me the slip....... he's not there. No he is. No he isn't. He's got to be. I debated whether or not I should give an ultra soft grunt to try and get him to move and see if he was still there. Decided to wait.. Seemed like an eternity, especially with my pulse racing. Had to talk myself down several times. Just then he stepped out, continuing down the trail. Put the bead on him and shot right through his heart about 70 yards. He ran about 20 yards and was down. This is my first muzzleloader buck. Thanks to all the folks on this site who helped me decide on getting a peep site and figuring out the right charge and bullet to use.

Nice buck,  :)
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
