Found Rino 530 near Mt. Adams
« on: September 29, 2009, 12:55:05 AM »
I found a Rino 530 while hunting near Mt. Adams on Sept 19th. I was packed up and heading home when I found it on a gravel road. I do not have one of these, so it took me a few minutes of fiddling with it to get it turned on and on the radio part of it. I transmitted on it all the way down the mountain, looking for the owner ( or a pal of the owner, who might have been on the same freq), but received no answers at all. So as a last gasp effort to find the owner, I thought I would post here in hopes that someone will know who lost the Rino. If you do, post a email address on here so I can contact you and ascertain that it is yours ( the first ( I assume) name entered on the first screen I come to on it is not an everyday name), as well as the names of some of the waypoints in it.

Thanks
Diablo

I'm not sure about the 530, but alot of GPS' have a spot for owner details...i.e. name, phone number, address.  You might also check to see if they have any way points "marked" to get an idea or general location of where they might be camped or are from.  I'm not sure what else to look for other than maybe a serial number that you could check with the manufacturer to see if it had some sort of warranty... :dunno:

Hello,
Hey..... I was up there and got schooled on Rino's and the benefits from several of the guys up there - and came back and purchase one.  I may know who's it is.  Not real sure how to get in touch with them though.
When you fire it up does it display a name and are there still a list of contacts (names?)
You could post or PM contacts to me I can see what I come up with.
It's great your  looking  - I am sure its a big loss to somebody.

Nice to see there are still some honest people out there. I have a rhino 530 and they are about $500 bucks. I'm sure the owner will be happy that you found it, that is if he finds you.

I was thinking the same thing Bitt said above.  I bet if you do your homework and maybe get it to someone that knows a lot about them that you may be able to locate the owner or where it was purchased and post a found sheet on the wall or something, heck the guy might even have his house marked on there.  Kudos to you for being honest and good luck.

Did you turn it on to see what the screen name was?  Might help find the person.

Guys,

When I turn it on, it does display a name, but it is only either the first or last name, not both :( .  I did have a guy I know who has a Rino 530 look through it to see if he could find any kind of owner information but nada, zip, nothing. Please keep spreading the word, and I will continue to check on here to see if anybody pops up claiming it. Losing a 500 buck toy like this would really hurt, and ruin a good hunt ( as well as having to take flak from your significant other who probably was not too pleased that you got it instead of new curtains).

I applaud your efforts.  One last approach you should try is contacting Garmin and giving them a serial number.  It is likely the owner registered the unit with them, and they may have contact info. 800-800-1020.

I thought the first thing "everyone" does when they get a new toy um GPS is put in your "home" location and check out how accurate it is?

That's a great idea I had to register my unit in order to get support for the topo's and warranty!  :)

Was it on channel 5 code 15 or channel 15 code 5?

Are any of the contacts in it: "Old Nasty" Or something close to that, "Rick","Alex", or "Greg"?

If your on the MAP page you can go to the "Setup Map" menue, and change the display to display contacts.

Great that you found the owner! All when I was wondering if there really were honest people out there.

Gets me thinkin.. "Home" is a locked way point but I think I'll put my name and number in the battery cover or electronically in my Rino, -just in case I do somethin stupid and give someone else an opportunity to be honest.

I wear this old wool shirt jacket on most hunts. Large pockets. I take the lanyard of the Rino and thread it through the pocket flap button hole, then loop the Rino through the loop. Rino goes in the pocket. Right there when I need it, and I can't drop/loose it.

I found something of about the same value as that 530 on Friday afternoon. On pavement. Generating some good Karma for myself, I've posted an ad in the local small town news paper for someone to reply/identify it. If that doesn't work, there are other slightly more embarassing means to find the owner.

This is something nobody ever wants to lose.
