Elk calling dvd/cd
« on: September 30, 2009, 12:57:48 PM »
After going to Colorado to tag along with my buddy on his archery hunt a couple of years ago and seeing elk that close scream in my face, I just can not wait to try archery hunting for myself.  I will finally be able to do it next season and would like to start to learn how to call now.  I bought a Primos 3 pack of reeds with a cd, but the cd doesn't really help me at all. It is just 6 minutes of talking about nothing and putting the reed in your mouth.  I have messed around with the reeds, but can't really make any decent sounding elk sounds.  I know that I really don't know what I am doing, but the reeds don't seem to fit right and I don't know if they are even worth a darn.

I am looking for others suggestions of cds or preferably dvds that give a good how to blow a reed.  Also for this dvd I would like to actually use the reed or reeds they are using in the dvd.  A few years ago I got a duck call and a dvd in a package deal and they didn't even use the call I purchased in the dvd.  After learning how to blow a duck call later, I am fairly certain that the one I purchased with the dvd isn't capable of making most of the sounds they were trying to teach me.  I don't know if this would be an issue with reeds or not, just want to throw that out there.

So if you would, let me know what worked for you or what would be easier to learn on, ie single, double, or triple reed calls and what cd or dvd really helped you figure it out.

Thanks

Google Elknuts. I think his website is elknuts.com.  Very good set of DVDs and tons of info about it.  I highly recommend the 3 pack of dvds.

I looked at his after I did a little searching on here.  I am a little hesitant only because I am a member of ifish and the members there blindly plug any sponsor's products even if they are complete junk just because they support the site.  Not saying this is the case here, but you never know.

dpdub, We have a one hour DVD called "Mastering The Mouth Reed" & yes the reeds used in the DVD are the very ones we use ourselves, they just happen to be the Bugling Bull Game Call reeds on top of that. We feel they are the best out there & have used them for years now, the combination of the DVD & Mouth Reeds will help you out in your requests immensely!
The 3-Pack of DVDs mentioned earlier are on Elk Vocalization & Instructional elk hunting info they are not designed on how to use a mouth reed as is the "Mastering" DVD. Just thought I'd set the record straight! (grin) Please feel free to call me at 208-630-3480 if you'd like more detail on the DVDs.

By the way I'm not a Sponsor on ifish, actually I've never been on that Site but it's nice to hear others have recommended us.!

I will testify to Elknut's DVD collection as being exceptional.  I have been calling elk for 20+ years, and I still learned things from him that I put to use this past month.  The only way to learn what an elk is saying with each of his calls and how you should respond is by putting in 30+ years of being in the woods or having someone teach you.  Elknut's videos are that teacher.  He stands in front of the camera making the sounds and explaining them: what they mean, why you hear them, how to respond, how not to respond, etc.  If you do nothing but blindly follow his advice, then you will be three times the caller that most bowhunters out there today are.  If you use his techniques in conjunction with good woodsmanship and adapt to each situation, then your odds will go through the roof.

I got both elknut's DVDs and Rocky's (Bugling Bull) DVDs/Cd's and to be honest with you the more info the better.  You can go wrong with more information, everyone has a little different take on things.  The more you can compile and learn from the greater your knowledge will be.  There is no replacing first hand experiences, but I have found that these videos will give you a little more insight into past experience also.

Get Joel Turner's seminar on the Lethal Release DVD, best common sense calling/strategy/sounds ever.  Helped me out big time with my calling.  www.lethalrelease.com

Joel Turner's dvd is great and there is one more from Steve Chappell called Extreme Elk Calling ( google Extreme Elk Calling), Joel T actually recommended this cd to me, it has been a wealth of info. If you are having trouble with the Primos mouth reed, I suggest trying another brand, I use Carlton reeds because they fit my mouth better, it all depends what works best for you.  :twocents:

 :yeah:

I recommend his CD's over his DVD's.  Only because if your like me you spend more time in your truck than in front of the tv.  They are the exact same info.  The CD's are the sound from the DVD's.  I learned more about calling elk listening to his first CD than I had learned in my entire life.  If you buy all his CD"s you'll go from a complete rookie to earning a masters degree in calling elk.  I can attest that his info works awsome.  If I had a branch bull tag this year my freezer would have been full multiple times.

wal-mart sells a grunt tube with video by something Carlton.  pretty good instruction video that covers a number of calls from reeds, hootchie mamas, and grunt tubes as well of combinations of two or more.  i think it was about 23 bucks.

I like a couple different CDs/DVDs for different reasons. First of all Elknuts' are great as instructional cds/dvds.

Steve Chappell's Extreme Elk Calling is good because he talks about what calls he uses and has quite a bit of real elk sound tracks so you can practice mimicking the elk.

Finally Jim Horn has a couple CDs that are good because they include a great discussion about calling, but also the biology/habits of elk that is helpful for anyone learning to call.

Edit:  I listened to a Joel Turner presentation and would like to check out what he has to offer as well.
