Who's been up on the Peninsula??
« on: December 27, 2007, 10:41:13 AM »
I havnt heard anything about the steelheading up in Forks yet this year. Normally I've been up there by now but I havnt had a chance yet. Just curious what the hatchery run has been like. I want to get up there soon so I can bring back a couple of clipped ones to eat before I go C&R some native hogs!

Thats kinda what I figured. I'm really good family friends with a fish checker up there and I havent heard from him in a few weeks. Hopefully after all the rain we'll get some colder weather to slow down the rivers.

It doesn't normally even begin to get good until the end of November. At least for hatchery runs. The good native fishing normally doesnt get good until the end of this month going into late February. You know I am referring to winter steelhead right?

 :chuckle:
I was hoping so, after I posted I started wondering if you were referring to the rivers and not the steelhead! :chuckle: :chuckle:
It normally is good in November, for hatchery fish. Its hard to say when it is "best" up on the peninsula where it can rain 10 inches in less than 24 hours at any given time. A lot of guys only like fishing for the hatchery fish because you can keep three. Toward the end of the hatchery run, when the natives come rollin in is when I like to fish. A good hatchery fish out of the Bogashiel is maybe 15 lbs. Its the native's that can get freakishly big. My dad had one on last year that straightened out a big treble hook as if it were made of aluminum.

The hatchery run on the Bogachiel this year was pretty much a bust.
They never showed up in the normal numbers.
There are a few natives just starting to show up, but it is pretty slow also.
The water has been difficult this year with all of the rain.
The best is yet to come.
