Hunting Techniques

Was wondering what kind of techniques best work for some of you guys. Scent cover? Walking around in the woods making noise, or just finding a good place to sit and glass. Do you get in your spot before the sun rises or walk in at first light? Will be up in the woods on sat for opener and would like to get some other opinions. I will be in a wooded area with a bunch of clearcuts. Looks like real good country with lots of potential. What works best for you guys? Thanks and good luck to everyone this weekend.

In before light. Sit until well after the sun is up. Still hunt the rest of the day. Sit into the evening. Back to camp via darkness.

I like to scout in the pre season and sit on natural funnels and staging areas.  Then I love to call in the pre-rut and some during the rut.  Once the rut kicks in I hunt the does, find the does, stay down wind and you will find the bucks.

If your like me and are hunting a postage stamp of private land in hillbilly heaven, set up on the paths the deer travel. In the area i hunt it is 99% private ground and the common tact is to drive the property with trucks. The deer run to places like our canyon for cover. We put shooters on the deer trails and if there are lots of deer around we fill our tags fast. One secret is to tuck the deers tongue in its mouth before the photo!!

Road hunt, nothing better than crusing around in the cab of a warm dry truck, make sure to have the maximum number of people that will fit in your rig along for the ride, makes the drag to the road easier.
A few good road hunting tips
1) Make sure to have a big thermos of coffee, nothing worse that having to drive back to camp for more.
2) Get a semi auto like a remington with the removable magazine (clip) easy to throw in when your bailing out of the truck, no hinged floor plates, they get in the way.
3) If you do use a bolt action, use a rubber band to hold open the bolt, hook it around the bolt and then the butt stock, nothing worse than having the bolt jiggle closed when your riding around on all those bumpy roads.
4) For a hot lunch, wrap a u-nuke-it burritto in foil and put it up on the defroster, it will be nice and warm come lunch time.
5) Dont forget to take your gun with you when you stop to pee (after all the coffee), nothing worse than missing the big one because your standing there holding the little one.
6) A money saving tip is to get a 30-06 and dont buy any ammo, just stop at every camp and ask if you can borrow a shell or two because you forgot
yours, heck you'll have a box or two after a few days.
7) Make sure to have the biggest scope you can afford and set it on the highest setting, that way you wont need a set of binos.
Make sure to count all the bucks hanging so when you get home you can say i saw blankety, blankety # of bucks but nothing i could of shot at.

I hope this helps, it must work because the friggen road by my place looks like 1-5 during rush hour during the rifle hunt.

That was hard to type with a straight face, like the other guys said, up early and use your glass, when your ready to leave, talk yourself into just staying another 1/2 hour and glass some more..

Depends really on where i am hunting.  I was born and raised in Colville, so most of my hunting up in the NE corner was still hunting during the rut and letting the deer do all the moving around.  But we also go to wyoming every year which is very open and strictly spot and stalk (my favorite).  I am archery hunting now in washington the past couple seasons and found that when i'm bowhunting muleys i basically take my time, move slow, and when opportunities arise to sit and really pick apart the hillsides (glass) i do.  Basically try and move like a cougar

I like to get to a pre-scouted spot, well off the beaten path, before light. Glass the morning, and still hunt/sit on natural funnels during the day. Usually glass the evening until dark.

I already have a stand in place ( and yes it's a tree stand ). Looking for a certain buck...seen him 2 years in a row, should make book this year if I can get a shot at him...If he's still alive. I have a honey hole so it's in before light and out at dark. Scents, grunt tube and rattling antlers. I only hunt the rut for whitetails. So I'm waiting for Nov.

I like spoit and stalk the best , but if the mullies are migrating you can do great by staking out there path , dress warm for that you might sit all season. during the rut i like to cover alot for ground and find groups of does. if that fails just drive thirty five mph and catch them off gaurd if you drive to slow they will spook, never , never close the truck door works great if some one drives the truck off while you get ready for the shot .oh yeah private property is the best bet.

BuckMark.....you forgot to mention painting your vehicle camo and lifting it 105 inches to find those sneaky bucks hiding in the trees.  Also every dedicated road hunter will have bucket seats in the bed of his camo monster truck for the two lucky guys that won the coin flip for the first shot at the wiley tree muley.  Don't forget the game cart.
