What I found on the web says  that it is a reliable semi auto 45ACP. double action pistol, 3rd generation of S&W semi autos. Most will shoot any kind of ammo without problems. The triggers may need some work to be really nice. Talked to a friend at the gunshop and he said that they are worth $400.00-$500.00 depending on condition and what kind of sights are on them. The magazines are specific to the gun, (1911 mags won't work). Hope this helps.

Good Luck

I had one several years ago, good gun, well built and accurate.  Should have never got rid of it, little big for a daily packer but worked great.
