Peola deer hunters
« on: October 21, 2009, 12:01:08 PM »
i usually don't start a rant thread to piss and moan about stuff but i've been hunting the alpowa ridge area of the peola unit for about 10 years now. i have family there and have a lot of private land to hunt there. year by year it's been getting worse and worse with folks trespassing on others land and folks road hunting.
we saw very few legal deer this year, but we saw alot of does, fawns and young little bucks. we saw probably 5 total whitetail deer, and probably 75 mule deer in a few days worth of hunting. the mule deer definitely seem to be outnumbering the whitetails, although it would be nice if some would grow up a little.

if any of you are from the group of 4 younger guys that shot the 4x4 with the guy in the blue dodge diesel truck...i have live trail cam pics of your buck from the day before you shot it.

if any of you guys were one of the 3 guys in the green dodge regular cab truck with the canopy on alpowa ridge...you should get out of the truck once in a while and get more than 4' away from the truck if you want to glass for deer. you're a lot more likely to kill a deer if you do. you should also talk to the landowner before you decide to hunt their land. oh yeah...your road hunting tactics blew it 2 times for an 11 year old kid on his first deer hunt and his first 2 stalks. thanks.
his 3rd one payed off with a nice little buck so don't worry about it.

I was in Peola for the opener and ditto about the mule deer. Wow I have never seen so many, and the whitetails where have they gone? I agree that there were few mule deer bucks but it looks like the muley population has expolded in that unit, which is just fine with me.

Our place is out of sight from the road and I believe that helps keep the hoopleheads out. We didnt have any trespassers this year, going on 5 years straight. We killed 2 bucks and saw about 5 more. Not great but enough to keep things interesting. Saw several mulies and whitetails running together strange but cool!

I feel your pain Jackalope.  Same sort of thing happened to us opening morning.  Crowds here are getting ridiculous.  Sounds like it's not much better on private land.

My theory is that word is out about the winter kill in the Northeast, so a lot of people shifted their focus to the Blues and the Palouse this year.  Talked to the game wardens on Saturday night, one guy checked 72 hunters on a single stretch of road in the Blues in a 3 hour period.
My spot was completely saturated with hunters opening day.  Usually I hike deep in and am sharing it with 5 or 6 other guys, which is manageable.  This year there were two guys in every draw.  3 pickups parked out in the middle of the CRP Field :bash: :bash: My mission this year will be to find a new spot.  Too bad.  Took me 5 years to get this one "figured out".

the other bad side to the trucks in the CRP fields is the fires they will start. I wonder if those guys realized the risk they were running there.

I heard about a lot of game warden business down there this year too.

Hey Pathfinder101 - I don't know about everyone leaving the NE. I was just north of Newport opening weekend and the crowds were like nothing I have ever seen up there. Granted it has been 7 years since hunting opening rifle in WA.
Opening morning, we must have heard 2-250 rounds fired off in the first 2 hours. It was almost scary. :yike:
Sunday was slightly better with only about 150 shots all day. The number of road hunters was crazy.
