Trying to connect the blacktail dots
« on: October 25, 2009, 06:26:09 PM »
Ok. Have a latebuck permit for unit 574. Been hanging out up there during Sept and both weekends now during hunting season. Not seeing alot to nail down any one area. I know that it's still a bit early in that deer move into here from the Soiuxon and the rut isn't kicking in quite yet. This unit is heavily timbered with alot of underbrush so visibility isn't the greatest, at least until more leaves come down. Anyway, yesterday I did find an area that seems a decent bet. I found a fair amount of fresh tracks and droppings. This is old growth dog fir with just the right amount of underbrush for the deer to feel somewhat secure and still for a guy to see and have a reasonable chance of getting a shot and not just see patches of hair, you know ? From up top the slopes gradually drops down towards a creek where several small feeder draws come into it. This slope faces south. There are some game trails and buck rubs that appear to have been made last year. Am I close with my homework ? Still not seing deer though. I hunt the " right " times of day, glass the timber and slowly move through the woods and do alot of sitting. And yes I use my spray powder to watch the wind too. Last night about 1/4 mile in I sat watching a trail and small saddle I kept telling myself to wait another 5 mins each time I wanted to leave because of thr darkness. What am I doing wrong or do I need to just stay at it ?
Can't we all just get along?

Yep, just stay at it and watch the wind.  Keep the wind right and hunt crosswind if you're going to cover ground. so you can glass/look for deer moving early and late in the day.  Deer will often travel with the wind at their backs.
