cougar hunting...where?
« on: January 01, 2008, 08:51:57 PM »
so if you were me where would you go hunt cougars...

westside of the mountains or eastside of the moutains?

i dont have any calls so i know im at a disadvantage...but i got very good optics and im not against cutting tracks and getting lucky.

so where would be the better bet, eastside say teanaway, teanum, colockum or somewhere around there.
or westside anywhere...

cougars are every where, east or west dont matter. east side tends to be better hunting becuase they get more snow and you can see better over there, IMO. just gotta get high enough to the snow level and you'll find cats

Find its prey and then look for tracks

Eastside would be my choice.
I would suggest saving your gas money this year and purchase a caller or some calls, do some scouting from home with online maps and then hit it hard (and better prepared) next winter.

I seen a ton of tracks this year on the West side during the late archery hunt.  I think the open terrain in the East would be nice but I have never seen so many tracks as I did this year in the West.

I was in Eastern Lewis county in the Gifford Pinchot.

thats a little farther south then i want to go.

i think im gonna run up into a little area where i have seen alot of cats over the years. problem is that its a long walk to get into said area sence i have not key to get in this year.

but there snow on the ground and it will be a nice days hike.

I imagine eastern washington would be nice because its more open than the westside. But i have more experience on the wet side cause thats where i do my predator hunting mostly. There are lots of cougars in the gifford pinchot forest. A few years back during the late buck i was watching a ravine that had been clear cut, when on the other side i noticed a cougar stalk up a treeline on a clear cut and sit on top of a stump-watching the same clear cut i was-lol talk about competition. luckily i had a cougar tag, unfortenately i a had "cat fever". (cough cough). LoL ive never seen a cat jump as high as that one did.
So if I was you i would try to figure out where the deer are concentrating at and find a good place to glass. although calling would be ideal.  just my two cents.

if you got somewhere in mind to go i would be down to go.

i just found out a problem that really put a hurtin on my cougar hunting...my suburban has bad tabs and i have no cash to get new ones. GRRR  :bash:

so im gonna have to wait till later in the year...which is fine by me.
