Mrs Rhinoron Scores first ELK
« on: November 01, 2009, 08:49:08 PM »
So don't you just love it when a plan comes together!   :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

So Friday Evening I head up Mt.  Stiffler to locate any prospects for the next mornings hunt.  It had been raining all day and the evening fog was beginning to settle in for the evening.  As I cleared a stand of trees and approached a slash pile I noticed some movement.  When I got my glasses up I was able to see that is was the back end of an Elk.   :yike:  After getting into a better position I was able to glass an open field where 2 spikes and 5 cows where all laying down for the evening.  At that point I took a few pics with my cell phone and txt'd them back down the mtn to my Mrs.  I told her I would put them to bed and we would return in the AM.  ;)

So when I got back down to the house we made a plan for the AM and rallied our gear.  Later in the evening Mrs.  Rhino while talking to one of her friends on the phone, told her "jokingly"    that we would be getting up in the AM she would be shooting a Spike and I would shoot my cow and we would be back home for breakfast.

Well that is what happened to the letter.  Based on our plan from the evening prior,  we set out an hour before light and got into position.  I on top of the Mt and Mrs. Rhino strategically placed in an open field behind an old hay back stop.

Our plan worked perfectly,  I was to spot the Elk as they moved from the open field to the cover of the trees and she was to wait for them to break out into the opening on their way to the river. .  As soon as I reached the spot I was the night before I was able to make out faint out line of a cow moving into the trees.  The plan was coming together perfectly.  BUT, As with all wars the first causality is always the plan.   I had not planned for a couple fellows driving around a locked gate onto a well posted private piece of property and then head into the trees right where the Elk had just disappeared.   :bash: :bash: :bash:

Moments after I started hearing shots ring out 1, 2 then 3 4, 5 then 6.  As I hear the shooting and know that is so close and random I head for the ridge line to try and cut off the Elk as they head for the river.   With part one of the plan blown part two is coming together at a high rate of speed.  As I reach the ridge line I see the last cows break out in to the open field and head right straight to where Mrs Rhino was sitting.   2 Cows crossed within 10 yards of her and the others (Minus 1 Spike) stay out about 150 yards.  As the approach her line of sight she takes aim and waits for the Spike to clear the cows.  Just then "WHAM"  and the Spike drops tot he ground.

Then the dance party is on.  At this point she thinks no one is watching so she starts what could be best described as the jitter bug mixed with the "PEE PEE" dance all the way to the downed Spike.  To say the least she was a happy girl.  Following Pics say it all.  Notice the Rainbow in the back ground.  I guess it did lead to a pot of Gold.

Part "two" of the story will be on another post.  No sooner than I start to head down the Mtn and the Game is back on for me.

It wasn't long after they started shooting that the Game warden and several State Patrol officers responded to the property.  It's a pretty tight knit community and people were watching the property as someone recently snuck in there a poached a huge bull.  They shot it and got nervous and left it.  Far as I know they never caught the A^&%holes.

CONGRATS Bobbi...way to go filling the freezer.
:fire.:

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield
