Jones diaphragms - blue or red (small or medium bull).  Nothing beats the realism of diaphragm calls and you can control the volume very well.  External reed calls have their place and I use them but I prefer the hands-free versatility of diaphragms.   :twocents:

I use the diaphragm calls as well. Hands free, easy to use. Though you could use a hoochie mama, which everyone in the woods is going to have or some type of reed call.

I like the berry x-5,it's a all around good call.I like reed calls because you can copy the sounds that the elk are making and fit right in with the herd. If you use a hoochie mamma you will sound like the odd cow and get eyes looking in your direction. If you don't know how to use a reed just play with it for a week and don't give up in the first 30 mins.
If you want to make it,
you can't fake it,
you gotta live it.

I have had and witnessed bad results from Hoochie Momma's. IMHO they are too loud. If you dont know how to use a diaphram, get one of those bite-and-blow calls like a Jones or Sceery. and practice doing it SOFTLY. I call them in quite a bit keeping it real low key, but when I get too loud they shut up and move on.....just my :twocents:

some like myself wish i could use a diaphragm, but due to very bad molar alignment and small upper pallet i cant seal a diaphragm well in my mouth with out almost gagging. reed calls are nice but i sure wish i could use a diaphragm easily  :(

but i did find that if you have one of those instructional cd's , not dvds, you can pop it in the rig whenever your alone like on your way to work or stuck in traffic and practice with out bugging everyone else in the world. just make sure the windows are rolled up :chuckle:
