Great elk camp 2009~PIC HEAVY
« on: November 09, 2009, 09:41:24 AM »
Home and back to work after 10 days off and in the woods.

My dad, brother, uncle and i left on Oct 30th for elk camp and returned Saturday afternoon.

We saw ELK every day, saw lots of deer, saw tons of grouse, saw turkeys even saw two giant billy's.
But after Miles and Miles of hiking and hours and hours of glassing we just couldn't put it together.

Made some wonderful memories that will last longer than any elk steak.
Had a great time meeting new people and spending time with family and friends.

Cant wait to start planning for next year.
Next year we are doing wall tents so we don't have to come off the mountain as soon as the snow hits.

Hope everyone had great hunts this year.
Now its time to switch back to deer.  Late Muzzy and Late Archery.......

I took about 500 Pics so here is some pics i selected from our hunt.

thanks! As i get older with every hunting season i realize more and more how valuable great memories are.
The best place to make them is in the woods and around a camp fire.

Looks like a great hunt.  I'm glad there are so many people on this site that value the experience, and a kill is just a perk.

I for one have learned the importance of a great hunt and not just the importance of a kill.

Guess you got out before the heavy weather set in?  Heard there was several feet up on top last week, a few guys had to be helped out from above the gap conditions so bad.

Looks like good times bwb.  You putting together another film?

yeah thats why we pulled up stakes.....got off the mountain as soon as the snow fell.
next year we are in there for the long haul.
besides snow is the best time to hunt.

Im really new here and lurk allot but I just gotta wonder how people hang in camp during the mid day periods and cook, chop wood, stand by fires and such in there hunting clothes? Seems the guys who are getting it done are not wearing theres all around camp.
I know mine is never in my living space and I have a seperate tent just for dressing if its cold and crappy. Early season I hang stuff in the trees and dress outside, after b-fast and coffee. When I return for a mid day nap I change.

I know by my success that my scent is not an issue. This early bow season I was so close to animals no matter the wind they should have smelled me. I had many, many chances at less than 35 yards...

Snuck up on my Blackie and nailed him the first 2 hours of the first day. Scent had allot to do with it as I had to circle him. Being downwind at one point at less than 40 yards. Not trying to brag, just see a big difference if scent control is used.

Not trying to hi jack the thread, just an observation and may be one big reason your not getting meat in camp?

Either way, great camp and great times with family.

Thanks for the tip...however we always use scent blocker before we go out.  i used a whole bottle for a week.
and we sometimes change if we are gonna be around the camp fire for a while.
I can assure you that scent is not the issue.
We were so close to elk all week we could have thrown rocks at them.  But identifying a spike and having a clean and ethical shot is a little more difficult.  we just couldn't line up the stars.
The meat will come when it comes.  :hello: :IBCOOL:
