Coyote this morning
« on: November 14, 2009, 09:46:36 AM »
The wife and I went to the Redwind Casino last night, so we got in late and slept in this morning. Well the chicken coop is on the side of the house where our bedroom is and at 8:00 a.m. the chickens were going nuts. I jumped up looked out the window to see a coyote looking dumbfounded by the fence it just ran into. Went into slow motion (it seemed) trying to load a gun, and get out of the house. In the 30 seconds or so it took me to do that the yote was gone. My GSP, however, jumped on his track and was gone into the back pasture heading for the woods. My first thought is crap if he catches that yote he will probably get tore up killing it. Back in the house for clothes and out the door for a run in the morning woods. Finally found the dog, after about fifteen minutes of searching, no worse for the wear. And just to think I was going to go out and do some calling yesterday afternoon in the back, but got sidetracked by honey-dos. Gonna have to go out today and use some chicken-in-distress.

I went out this morning. No luck. Even shot a pest and threw that out there and started calling again. Maybe it was cause we had our chicken coop raided last night too and they got 2....
Make every shot count cause ya might not get another.

Went out in the back and called for half hour or more. Thought I heard something coming in the thick brush, but couldn't be sure. The wind also played havoc with me swirling all about, so I am sure that didn't help, but I will get after them. We have two packs around our place. One is across the railroad tracks on the other side of the road which must be their territorial boundary. The other pack roams the hundred acres behind us, our 24 acres, and the the 60+ acres of all our neighbors. I will get one or two eventually just have to stay after it.

Any of you guys use ever use a tree stand for calling to get above the brush?

I use a treestand on some of my stands. They work great. I don't use them all the time.
Getting above the brush sure makes it easier to see the bobcats ;)
