traditional archery?
« on: January 07, 2008, 09:46:49 PM »
what arrows do you guys shoot? also if you shoot cedar arrows what broadheads to you use?

and if you shoot alluminum or carbin arrows what broadheads to you shoot? im gonna stay with the traditional 2 blade design with a bleeder blade. but thats just me.

but im gonna get some cedars aswell just to have and need options for broadheads.

I used to shoot port orford cedar shafts out of my recurve, but I always found they would fly great with field points and when I practiced with the broadheads you really had to mess around with them to make them fly true. I have used zwickeys with bleeders, magnus two blades vented with bleeder blades and their snuffers. The broadheads with bleeder blades were a lot tougher to shoot. I think if I go back to traditional gear I would go with just a two blade head if I were shooting cedar shafts. I did switch to some easton aluminum I think they were 2216's and they shot great with field point and broadhead. I shot Magnus Stingers and Montec G5's and I never had to tune my arrow or bow for them to fly true. Hope this helps in some way

cool. i got alot of different broadheads for my carbons. just gotta shoot them and see what flies best.

i have some old bear 2blade broadheads with bleeders...well they use to have bleeders lol. they shoot great out of my 45lb ben pearson recurve...but those arrows arent spined right for my new 65lb blackwidow i just picked up from bearhunter...

ive been shooting some ics 300's at 30" with 125gr heads and they shoot very nice. but man i just want to shoot cedars. no reason why just want to. but yeah lol i better stick with what works.

i just dont know what broadheads to shoot.

if a smaller say slicktrick sized or a bigger zwickey sized broadhead would fly better...i know that BW claims you need 8-10gpi per lb for arrow weight for thier bows.

idk what mine are...ics 300's 10.1gpi cut at 30" with 125gr heads. so yeah...

I would be willing to bet that cedar arrows are in the ballpark of 10 gpi and will shoot great out of your black widow. I would buy my arrows in bulk though because they aren't quite as durable as your carbon or aluminum arrows. You might also try picking some peoples brain over on Stickbow.com for what broadheads work best for them, there is a ton of information for traditional archers.

I currently shoot Port Orford Cedar 11/32 shafts, cut to 30 inches. I shoot a #55 takedown PSE "Raven Series" by Jeffery (Jeffery was comissioned by PSE to build the bows). I pull it to 29 inches, which makes it about #58 lbs. The shafts are spined to #55-60, which I bought from Suzanne St. Charles at Northwest archery (google it and it should come up, she is an arrow maker...)

Since you are shooting a #65 bow, you might want to think to the other end of the spectrum, and go with weight (wood) vs. speed (carbon/alum). I would shoot as heavy an arrow that I could get to fly straight out of that thing, maybe even try Boca or Hickory shafts or some other hardwood.

As for broadheads, I shoot Zwickey eskimos (2 blade, no bleeders).

If you study the Kinetic energy of an arrow, you will see heavy and slow beats fast and light anyday...one more reason why I am thinking of either upgrading to a custom bow by a boyer in the #65-70 range, or getting some new limbs for my recurve in that range. I am slowly turning from a deer hunter to an elk hunter, and want pass through penetration.

If you haven't already subscribed, spend the $20 and order Traditional Bowhunter magazine (it's published in Eagle, Idaho). They just had an awesome 2 part article about arrow penetration that discussed shafts, and broadheads, including some minor things that can be "tuned" within the combination itself...

good luck, and shoot often.

yeah i actually just broke 3 arrows today made my the st charles family...good friends of a buddie of mine...who was a big bear archery and st charles bow collecter...im an idiot for shooting them. lol

anyway yeah right now my bow is shooting perfect with the carbons. BUT im not getting the penitration i want in my targets. only about 1/3 of an arrow from 20yds.

when i would shoot the few wood arrows out of my 45lb recurve i was getting more penitration...

im always one for more heavy and slow over light and fast.

i lost 2 elk in one week caused by poor penitration...thanks to a local archery shop setting me up with to light of arrows and broadheads. that will never happen again.
