Randle help needed
« on: November 30, 2009, 03:41:31 PM »
Hi all,

I'm going to try and take my son for an elk next Friday/Saturday in the Randle unit. I have never been in that unit and know absolutely nothing about it.
I wanted to ask if anyone could tell me what to expect as far as terrain goes and closed roads.

I'm still heeling from a broken ankle so I can't walk more then a mile or two, but want to get off the roads that people are driving on. If there are closed roads to walk, that would help a lot.

I'm not looking for anyones sweet spot or anything, just some help on a starting place that is a little more ankle friendly. I'm pretty good at cow calling so if I can find them I can keep them busy while my son goes for it.

Thanks for any advise anyone can provide.

Regards,

Fulla

randal is a SMALL unit.. go down by the damn/park on the down river side... the area  on the L before the bridge has some gravel roads that are flat through clearcuts.... saw some deer early season and only some elk sign.. hope it helps
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Take US Hwy 12 into Randle, turn south onto Hwy 131 also known as Forest Rd 25. Stay to the right at the "Y", go about 1 mile from US Hwy 12, turn right onto SKINNER RD. Stay on Skinner RD (stay to the left at Clancy Rd), you'll pass by a blue gate (on your left side). Continue on until you come to a blue gate(locked). Walk thru the gate and you have a HUGE hunting area. I chased a herd of 25 elk around for 2 days this week.I'm back at work, so somebody needs to thin the herd (LOL).If you stay on the main rd (walking) it will bring you out (approx 1 1/2 mile) to the Cispus River. A big clear cut to your right, thats where the elk where. GOOD LUCK! It's cool you and your son hunt together!!!

I was down there last weekend and there was a TON of people driving around.  Keep in mind that you are overlapping with muzzle loaders down there.  I think that place is seeing more pressure due to the fact you cant shoot bulls in the Winston.  I spend a lot of time down there and haven't seen any elk this year.

Thanks everyone for the advise and direction. I will look for the places you have suggested on the map and hopefull I can find them. Yes, it is great to have my son interested in hunting. I had hoped my daughter would have also but it doesn't look like it. There is always hope  :)

Thanks again and I will let you know how we do.

Best of luck and regards,

Fulla

Considering how small that GMU is you wont have a problem finding them.
