This is to everyone that hates me for the shot I made on the Elk.  :bdid: I am very sorry and it will never happen again. I am not going to make any excuses. It was a stupid shot for me to take and I know that I could have wounded him by my stupid choices. Everyone have a great day.

Way to step up and admit it was not the most ethical shot to take, like said you got lucky on this one. Next time you might not be so lucky. Some people might not even be impressed by what you did. The bottom line is you did do it and you recovered it.

no im sure anybody that goes online and brags about the 103 yard shot they took on a elk with a bow isnt looking to impress any one. this one back fired on him and he's back pedaling.

huntergreg I think some of these guys too easily forget that hunting is a learning process like anything else. My guess is that a good number of these guys have attempted shots that they later wished they would not have tried. I know I have, and I am not afraid to admit it.

From the reactions on this forum, I am sure you probably have given some thought to being more responsible with future shot oportunities that you may get.

I for one want to welome you to the site and hope you will continue to be active on here. I believe that we as hunters should try to help each other out, rather than just ridicule a person who makes an error in judgement.

There is a great bunch of very ethical hunters on this site, if you hang out on here you will learn a lot from most of them. Just don't let the harsh ones get to you and try to learn from those that offer advice. :twocents:

My advice is that you need to establish what your personal effective range is at the range and try to not shoot beyond that range at game. For some hunters that is 20 yards, for others it is much farther, but in consideration for the animals that you hunt, you should try to establish your realistic effective range and use that as a guideline.

Congrats on getting the elk.... :)

Dont see how he is back pedaling?? He stepped up said it was wrong, whatelse we want from him?? Shoot a bow long enough and you might not take a 103 yard shot, but there will be a mistake made, wether you meant for it or not  ;)

Well, the elk was recovered, so I guess in the end it all turned out ok.  Hopefully questionable shots won't happen again.

But I think it says something about huntergreg to come back on and actually own up to being called out.  While I don't think anybody will condone the shot that he took, maybe we could let up on the unending criticism and give him a chance?  :dunno:  I think he's learned his lesson.

Remember, he did not step up on his own. He caught a lot of flack and even tried a new login name. Maybe not backpedaling but definately some side to side.

I guess I gotta give a little credit for staying and dealing with it though.

Whats *censored* is how close you can get to the animal before taking the shot, 20 yards or less on a big buck or bull during a general season on public land with any weapon...now thats something worth bragging about, k maybe 10 yards for archery if its during the elk rut  :P . Those are stories I like to hear about. Tree stands don't count lol. This whole, I earholed a buck at 500yrds with my 300 win mag or I donkey punched a bull at 103 yards with my bow.....then I'm just assuming your fat and lazy.  :yike:

That being said I'll shoot at 500+ yards in heart beat if its a coyote, and if I hit 'em I'll let ya know  :chuckle:

Lucky shot Greg.  Glad it turned out, a lot of those don't.  Setting pride aside to admit failure is noteworthy though, even if reminded.  Best of luck on your future hunts I hope you will share them here.

If you haven't yet, a bowhunter ed class might be fun to take with your son.  The certificaton is not required in Washington, but it is for some other states like Montana if you ever plan to hunt there.  Looks like you've had a good lecture here already, but consider the class.  It is fun and can guide you away from some situations like this and others.
