Scoring Elk
« on: January 13, 2008, 08:11:33 PM »
This post goes along with Elknuts post as far as scoring. I didn't want to hijack his thread.
So what do you think this bull scores. Also, he has 66" of mass I will post the score later.

Now I can finally see the photo, don't know why it didn't show up the first time I opened this thread. That is a hell of a nice bull. Is that from Washington too? I would guess 380 gross.

My first impression was it's hard to see the width and the main beams look short to me for some reason, but I know pictures are decieving especially from the side as this one is ... but still first thought was 374.

After I seen your thread on here I was browsing one of the other sites I frequent and you had posted the score on that site, I won't give it away though. Great Bull once again. If you remember the story to your hunt you should post it up here for us to read.

Well, some of the guesses were darn near right on. I just wanted to show how deceiving pictures are, and how difficult scoring can be from side views and strange angles. we had guesses from 335 to 396.  The actual score was 373 2/8  gross and 362 and 4/8 net.

How'd you have me beat.  I was spot on.  I assumed since he wanted a real score he was talking net. Not that gross stuff.  You were like 12 inches off. :)

I am curious about how do they score an elk as a nontypical compared to a typical. For instance a 6x7 , would you score it as a 6x6 and deduct the differences and the sixth on the one side that makes it a seven to score it a typical?  And could it score higher as a nontypical since it is a 6x7 and what do they deduct for that? nwhunter
