Down wind scent while calling song dogs (idea)
« on: January 05, 2010, 11:53:31 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has ever considered this.
While calling coyotes, they often will circle down wind. What if you took an arrow with a rag or piece of fur on it and applied some sort of attractor scent to it. You could shoot the arrow out in front of you just before setting up to call. That way when the coyote comes around to get a whiff of what is there, they might smell the scented arrow and stall or come to it. This could prevent them from coming around to get the caller's scent.
You would only need a small cheap bow to shoot the arrow out a ways.
For those of you on the east side, what do you think?

I had a similar idea with tennis balls and those sling shots for launching them.  The fuzzy coating would hold a lot of scent.  The bouncing and rolling would spread the scent all over.  Never tried it though.

:)If the coyote can smell the cover scent it can smell you. How would you launch without getting your stink on it?

What I was thinking was to shoot the arrow into the wind. This (in theory) would get the scent out in front and hopefully let the dog wind that scent before winding the caller as it tries to run around to get the scent. Hopefully the attractor scent would be powerful enough to cover the person's scent. A guy could use latex gloves while handling the arrow....maybe?
Just kicking around ideas.

im no expert here but from what ive read about scenting and misting is that most people believe reguardless of what or how much cover scent you use the coyotes can still smell you.  the cover scents and the process of misting supposedly triggers a stimulous overload in the poor ol' coyote.  the advantage isnt so much that theyll come in over your scent because its covered so much as they might stand there for a brief second while they try and figure out whats what giving you an opportunity to get a shot on a dog that otherwise would have winded you and turned tail.

ive wanted to experiment but have yet to do so.  i think a proper setup and the use of a decoy along with minimal movements will pry pay more dividends in the end then spreading around a bunch of smells and cover scents may help some but it will never cover your smell up completely.  the mere hassel of transporting the various scents these guys use coupled with the possibility  getting it on myself and then having to ride in the truck makes me hesitant.

if you try it let us know how it works.  also might want to research the topic of misting.  i know its been covered on several of the sites i am on if not on this one.  best of luck to ya.

He is not talking about using a cover scent on himself he is talking about putting out a lure away form himself.  Like a scent decoy with a remote deliver system.
