If it looks like a truck crashed off the road into the brush it's a moose.  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Its not an exact science.  Moose tend to go larger and smaller and elk tend to do moderate on sample trees.  Meaning moose tend to pick larger trees or more brush, and elk tend to moderate on tree size and tend to do about the same size tree.   Best bet would be to check the sap for hair.  You'll note there is usually hair in it.  This time of year moose rubs are fresh.....elk start about March or April.  Otherwise, its hard to generalize.   Location also helps....moose tend to be in holes and elk tend to be on a ridgeline. Thats also just a generalization.

elk will also not typically concentrate on one area in 113. they cover a lot of ground up there. moose in 113 tend to not have to roam around as much, they tend to stay within a 1/2 mile or so of the core area........typically.

one thing in 113 to look for is wallows, they are much farther and fewer between and almost always associated with elk.

bones advice in hair is the first thing I look for.

I have been able to determine based on the hair at least 95% of the time.

both have hollow hair, but moose is longer, bigger around, almost black and very coarse. elk tends to be the color of elk....lol.
