What could it have been?
« on: January 08, 2010, 07:14:42 PM »
Went out on Wednesday, and were sucking the ducks right into our set no problem.  Left at 10 and had 5 Mallards, and should have had 10 (if it weren't for poor shooting).

Today, the ducks were coming in and responding well to our calling and our initial fly overs, would circle us a couple of times, then bounce out.  Including setting on us a few times, then just kind of gliding by.  They weren't flaring at us or the decoys and would just drift off.  We did manage to get three today, but that was just by sheer luck that a few of those guys who were doing what I mentioned got a litttttttle to close :P  Anyways, what do you guys think?  Did something just not feel right to the ducks?  We were in the same spot.  It was wierd.  I know it could be anything and while I'm asking for advice, I assume it's going to be relatively useless  :chuckle: :chuckle:

They didn't like something.
Decoys in incorrect set up?
No movement?
The decoys were in a spot the ducks didn't want to be?
They could see you?
Lots of possibilities.  I just try to read the birds and change accordingly.  That usually works for me.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

We changed our set up multiple times, adjusted the blind.  The only thing I can think of is that there wasn't enough water for the pinnies to land (that was what we were seeing today) and the mallards were happy to land there.  Hell I dont know.  Back at it tomorrow.  Gooooo battle hunting!

If you hunt a spot the pintails have been sitting up for a bit, it's usually an easy shoot to get your 2 per person.  If they have been shot at hard, a bit more challenge.  I usually would bring a bag of pintail decoys, pull the mallard decoys a little closer than normal and then run the pintail decoys 10-15 yard past those.  Sometime out to 50 yards.  I then try to set up on the down wind side or the side they continue to approach from.  They seem to swing wide, so you get good pass shooting as they are trying to set up into the pintail decoys.  You usually can get good pass shooting in the 15-20 yard range on the birds.  You just have to out smart them or they frustrate you.
