Coyoties all around my house
« on: January 12, 2010, 01:59:20 AM »
I live out of town about 14 miles out in farm land. Every night just after dark they are howling and going crazy all around my house. During the day I see one just about every day. I have been trying to hunt them with my bow and it is the hardest thing to get them in range. They are very spooky.  :bash: During the day they are hard to call in. It is frustrating that just after dark they are all over. Tonight I herd 6 different coyotes howling and chuckling. I am going to keep on trying. I have about 100+ acres I can hunt on. Only 20-30 acres of it you can use a rifle. There is a canal that when you get on the other side of it is in the 334 area where no firearms are legal to hunt with. Last week my wife was driving home from town just after dark and saw a big bobcat a 1/2 mile down the road from the house. The coyotes are thick out here. Every time during the day you should see at least one coyote in some field heading into town.

You should hookup with one of the predator pros on here for a tutorial on evening shooting some dogs. Sounds like you have a great spot to dump a few....

If u are going for it with a bow i would be using a decoy for sure. They have to come in looking at something other then u. This will give u a chance to draw and shooy while there looking at your decoy. I like to use a coyote decoy this time of year. They are starting to pare up for some breeding. I have a montana decoy that works great. Sounds like u have enough yotes around that they will be pretty territorial if another yoe (decoy) moves in.  :twocents: :twocents:

Sounds like my place. I to live in the country on about 250+ acres. I get coyotes all the time. They've killed one of my dogs that I know of for a fact. I've seen them as far as 30-40 yards from my house. Time to start snipin!

Decoy is key with a bow (still hard as hell).  I used to use a stuffed toy dog I picked up in the kid section of wally world.  staked and tied it off with a pull rope back to a blind and used a dog distress call.  Worked good for a couple years before it gave up the ghost but it was cheap.

I thought it was rimfire only inside the KRD? use a 22mag or 17hmr???? or was it a landowner restrication?
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

If you don't care about truly thinning the numbers, then some of the basic things I would recommend would be to get away from any structure, set-up in thick cover with minimal access points, put that canal to your downwind side so they can't scent you, call very minimally since it is a small area and you want them hunting for the source of the sound, use a decoy with very little movement (a feather on a stake).

If you want to really lay the hurt to them, wait until the middle of March thru middle of April.  Howl at sunrise and sunset to locate the coyotes.  They will be denning and in a set spot.  Locate the den.  Shoot all females.  Check to see if they have dropped their pups.  If no, you are done.  If yes, split open the fallopian tubes and count the nubs.  The nubs are where the fetus has attached to the uteran wall.  Count the nubs.  That is how many pups she has had.  Get a shovel and start digging, have a shotgun ready if legal.  Shoot all pups until you have all that she dropped.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.
