WA State: Proposed "assault weapon" ban legislation
« on: January 15, 2010, 09:15:24 AM »
It is going to be a tough year for gun owners in Washington State. We now have a House Bill trying to ban face-to-face private sales and now a Senate Bill proposing an assault weapons ban that is more restrictive than California's.

You can check out more info in this good article:

http://www.examiner.com/x-4525-Seattle-Gun-Rights-Examiner~y2010m1d13-Bill-introduced-to-ban-socalled-assault-weapons

You should contact ALL of the Senate Judiciary Committee members even if you know they won't care about your opinion.

Here are the email addresses:

Senator Adam Kline kline.adam@leg.wa.gov District 37 D
Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles kohl-welles.jeanne@leg.wa.gov District 36 D
Senator Mike Carrell carrell.michael@leg.wa.gov District 28 R
Senator James Hargrove hargrove.jim@leg.wa.gov District 24 D
Senator Pam Roach roach.pam@leg.wa.gov District 31 R
Senator Debbie Regala regala.debbie@leg.wa.gov District 27 D
Senator Rodney Tom tom.rodney@leg.wa.gov District 48 D
Senator Bob McCaslin mccaslin.bob@leg.wa.gov District 4 R

Also, don't forget to contact all your legislators and mention both bills (House Bill 2477 is the bill to ban private face to face sales. Senate Bill 6396 is the Assault Weapons Ban):

I thought "assault weapons" were already banned in our state?  I went to an armorers class and I distinctly remember the instructor whining about not being able to bring the selective fire/full auto version into our state for a demonstration.

Every year is a tough year in our state.

The scariest parts of this bill are the annual home inspections and the crazy rules and hoops you have to jump through just to shoot a semi-auto.

This bill pretty much includes ANY gun with a capacity of more than 10 rounds.

Also, no more shooting on public lands.

Just got this from the NRA and thought it would be good to share:

Washington “Assault Weapon” Ban Impacts All Firearm Owners!
Stand-Up and Make Your Voices Heard Now!
Last week, NRA-ILA informed you about Senate Bill 6396, legislation that would bring California-style gun-control to the Northwest and ultimately ban many semi-automatic firearms commonly owned by Washingtonians.

In fact, SB 6396 is more far-reaching than it appears on the surface and will absolutely impact a gigantic swath of Washington firearm owners, including concealed pistol license holders, hunters and competitive pistol shooters. As examples, consider the following restrictions that flow from the provisions of this horrendous piece of gun control legislation:

   Every semiautomatic AND PUMP-ACTION rifle and shotgun that has a detachable magazine and has a pistol grip located rear of the trigger (yes, that is just about all of them) is defined as an “assault weapon” and is banned under SB 6396!
   If you and your child/children are out in the woods plinking with his or her Ruger 10-22 and there are more than 10 rounds in the magazine, you are a FELON!
   If you are a Concealed Pistol License holder and your semi-auto self-defense pistol contains more than 10 rounds, you are a FELON!
   The use of firearms defined as “assault weapons” (see first bullet point) are banned for use in hunting!
   Competitive shooters will be impacted as any semi-auto pistol that has a detachable magazine and is equipped with a muzzle brake or compensator is defined as an “assault weapon!”
   If you own a firearm(s) defined as an “assault weapon” on the date this bill becomes law, you can keep it if you are willing to allow your Sheriff to come into your home once every year to ensure you store your firearm(s) appropriately!

Senate Bill 6396 is proof that the gun-ban groups and politicians are not interested in only banning semi-automatic firearms that happen to look like military firearms. This bill shows where they really want to go with their agenda! This gun ban scheme will only punish law-abiding citizens and will do nothing to curb crime or keep criminals from obtaining firearms illegally.  This is not only another attack on our Second Amendment rights in Washington State, but an attack on your Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable searches of your home!

Please contact both of your State Representatives and your State Senator TODAY and urge them to oppose SB 6396!

Ok, so I actually shot out an E-mail to all of the juduciary commitee, and my local representatives.  So far I got one response back from Senator Bob McCaslin.  Said what we are all thinking,
"The sponsors of this legislation are just a few of the likely suspects in the majority party that introduce bills year in and year out in an effort to erode our constitutional rights.  I will of course oppose it".
Good to know that someone has half a brain!

I sent messages to my 3 state reps last week on this. I actually recieved a call back from Mike Carrell (r) (I was impressed). He said he is one of nine people on the commitee that this bill has to go through. It needs 5 votes to pass. 4 of the people are republicans and 5 are democrats. He sits next to one of the democrats on purpose, so he can bend his ear. He told me that this bill is basically dead and will not get passed, but it was sent through as a proposal because the politician (a democrat) that proposed this law is up for re-election this fall and wants some ammo (sorry for the pun) when re-election time comes. That way he can say that he proposed this bill and that the republicans defeated it.

So that is what I have heard. But by all means keep sending stuff to your state representatives!!!

A couple statistics, #1 The homicide rate in the US by means of assualt weapons was exactly the same before the Clinton ban as it was 4 years after the ban had been in effect (rate was 1%). #2 way back when WA DC put the handgun ban into effect, crimes involving handguns went up 200%!!!

Here are the senators who not proposed this bill. . .be sure not to vote for them in their upcoming re-election(s).  According to other representatives they introduced this bill primarily as a way to gain support for their re-election campaigns.

 Senators Kline (D-District 37) , Fairley (D-District 32), Kohl-Welles (D-District 36), and McDermott (not sure on this one. . .)

I heard back from one of mine today.  Representative Deb Wallace for the Vancouver area:

Thank you for writing about the bills that are again threatening our second amendment rights.  I can assure you that I will continue to do everything I am able to see these bills set aside.  I have been successful in the past in working with a select group of legislators on both sides of the aisle to ensure these bills don't pass.  Thank you for taking the time to write and share your opinion to protect our rights.

Deb

Also heard back from Senator Pam Roach, who had actually gone shooting just the other day with Brian Judy of the NRA and Senator Adam Kline who is the prime sponsor of the bill.  The purpose was to educate him on the different types and uses of firearms.  Needless to say, she strongly opposes the bill.

Something tells me that he cares more about getting re-elected than the gun issue.  I still wish these clowns would work harder on economic and infrastructure issues and less on "social engineering" issues.
