No i wont kill a nat, i wish we could close the rivers down to everyone ten yrs or so and let the fish come back i would put my rod down for that, how bout you? I know we both want a fix for the problem, but until we manage the fish for the fish instead of take or fishing it doesnt look good my friends. We are all part of the probem!

If that is what it would take for my grandkids to catch one YES.

I don't think it would take 10 years or an all out closer but I get yer point and agree with the line of thought. If we are to tell any user groop they must stop fishing we our self must be willing to as well.

I don't fish these river's but just a couple observations:

Is there still going to be a Skagit tribal gill-net fishery this year?

Tribal "co-managers", under treaty enforcement actions by the State are compelled to cease such activities when lower than necessary  returns are forecasted, this is up to the DFW to take to a higher power if necessary to preserve the runs.

Given the best data available on C&R mortality, vs. lethal gillnetting, this just does not make sense from any management perspective unless the gillnetting also ceases at least temporarily.

They closed the Skagit back in 2001 and the tribes still netted. It hasn't been reaching escapement since
then and only gets worse. They have decreased the escapment so far now that it may never come back.
Something has to be done and it looks like this is the first step, if the legislators see the sportees doing theyre part they may decide the tribes should do theirs too. I have made alot of great memories on the S/S system and will miss it greatly but I would also like my kids and grandkids to make some memories too.

Yes indeed something needs to be done before its too late. Time for the tribes to step up and do their part. Seen way too many fish wasted sitting in the trunks of their cars and rotting.

Ironhead and fishcrazey I say fish on until the brink or don't even buy a license. I quit fishing several years ago... love to do it just got tired of all the state monkey business... I believe the only way to bring the fisheries around is to make it collapse either financially or ### That is the only way to bring ALL parties onto one page... That also assumes that the WDFW won't play favorites.  :twocents:
