If it was a bolt gun I would use a .243 with a bullet in the 55 to 65 gr range. Knocks the tar out of them. For a AR caliber there's plenty to pick from excluding the .223. the .223 is a good cal for calling ranges and getting fairly consistent kills out to about 250 yrds using the right bullet, but there is better calibers. Again it's the guy behind the gun that matters the most.

depends.  i have a 22-250 dedicated to predators but i have been in some areas that i took the ar in .223 out due to the high number of coyotes in the area.  all personal prefference.  i would shoot whatever you are the most comfortable and familiar with.

For me its a toss-up between my AR or Encore in .223, both seem to do well out to and a little beyond 200+.  Sure, the extra distance of a 22-250/etc would come in handy at times, but the cost of ammo, selection of reloading parts and (lack of) frequency of long distance shots, the .223 seemed to be the best choice

Plus the semi-auto feature of the AR can't be beat

:)Calling for fun and entertainment , 223, calling to kill coyotes or a contest or shooting more than 250 yards "er so" 243 80 grain kicks butt! 243 is the go to gun. I shoot bolt guns. I have killed alot of coyotes with a 22-250 too and like it a lot, but it does not run with the 243 for killing at long range.

I killed my first dog with a 308 seemed to work well.  ;)  I hunt with a bolt .223 or mini 14 now.  I think the bolt .223 is a great option but I am regretting it a bit.  I wish it was a 243 now.  If it was a 243, I could still do everything I do now with the rifle, except I could shoot a bit farther and take the rifle out for deer season.  The rifle is a very accurate and really nice to shoot (Kimber).  With the 243 you just have more options as to what you can do with the rifle.  Just my .02 Good luck

Out here on the pennisula I use a 250-3000 bolt action carbine with a 1.25x4x24mm Ill. Dot scope loaded with 75gr "X" bullets.  Pelt hunting I shoot a 22-204(snow camo) bolt action with a 1.5x6x40mm scope loaded with 40gr NBTs at 3950fps or a 6mm-204(brush camo) bolt action 1.5x6x40mm Ill. Dot scope loaded with 55gr NBTs Lead Frees at 3600fps.  If I'm hunting with a partner or really heavy cover it's a 12ga/5.6x50R O/U with a 1x4x20mm scope loaded with 1 3/8oz Bismuth BBs and 52gr HPs.

I've always been a bolt action guy, until I shot an AR.  Now I have one really nice lower an several choices of upper.  I use the 17 Remington upper if we are after fur, the 223 if we are going to do some plinking too. The 25 wssm and 6.5 Grendel are heavy and so I haven't taken them out for coyotes (yet).
