What do you shoot?
« on: February 17, 2011, 07:13:56 PM »
Right now I am getting ready to sight in a borrowed AR style .223 so that I don't have to shoot my old .308.  I would like to start looking for a yote gun of my own, just wondering what all you veteran yote killers use and why?  I am leaning toward a 22-250.  I don't handload, so something I can buy ammo off the shelf for is in order.

I mainly use an AR in 223, but I have also killed a lot of dogs with my 22-250. Both are deadly on any varmint. Ammo is going to be cheaper to find for the 223, but remember you get what you pay for. If you compare good quality ammo it's not that much more to buy 22-250. Also I'm sure I'm in the minority but I tend to use a few more rounds per kill with the 223 over the 22-250 so for me it's a toss up in costs.   :twocents:

Just my opinion, but if its a bolt gun, i say .243, if its an AR platform, i say .223, cost being the reason. I have an AR type now, but by far, my best yote gun was a .243 bolt. ya tend to hit first time at longer range and your shooting 58 gr bullets at almost 3800 fps.

Savage bolt 223.  I just picked up a Remington 700 in 204 that I plan to try once I get it dialed in.  Have to fix the horrid trigger first though.

Depends on the game I am chasing, .300 winmag, 870 express, .17hmr. All good critter killers. :chuckle:

I like my 204s for sage rats, prairie dogs and coyotes. You can see the hits in the scope and it will out perform the 223. Ballistically it will match the 22-250 for the first 250 yards.
May you have a target rich environment!

22-250 is the best choice in my book. I like the ar-15's a lot as well. I am running a 7mm-08 a lot now.

Whatever's in my hands when one runs by..  But if I'm solely yote hunting I shoot a 22-250.

22- 250 and ar-15 are great choices couldn't go wrong with either  ;) 22-250 will reach futher more accurately than a ar outside of 250 yards. Either way you'll have a winner winner coyote dinner  :chuckle: I'm a ar shooter  ;)
Hey! I'm not a complete idiot I have parts missing. Though sometimes I wonder.

For yotes my 6mm always is along, then for a backup/second gun it is whatever fills my fancy that day.
7mm rem mag, .270wthby, 30-06, .308, .300win mag, looking for a .223 BLR or a 22-250 A-bolt grey laminate varmit stock with the boss...

Shoot the gun you are most comfortable with. I would use my .270 deer rifle. Always good to get practice on smaller game with the rifle you will use on big game.

Whatever I can grab first!  300 Win Mag, 30-06, .22, .410, 20 guage, 12, guage, .357, 9mm etc.  My go to right now is my .250 Savage but am getting (eventually) a 700 SPS Varmint (lh) in .243 for long range coyotes.  I like the extra punch at longer distances of the .243 over the 22-250 plus you can still hunt deer with it.  :twocents:

I would have to lean towards the Ar in 223, when it comes to cost & the ability for those quick follow up shots it cant be beat... Not that 22-250 is not a great gun for it as well but why not get quantity & quality rolled in one semi auto package.
