Oak creek question!
« on: January 28, 2010, 06:22:54 PM »
I was thinking of taking a road trip and bringing the wife and kids down to see the elk this saturday. Never been there before so I was wondering what is a good time to show up to see some of the bigger bulls? Also do they give rides throughout the lot and if so what times? Any help would be appreciated. Just trying to figure out if the drive down would be worth it or not.
Thanks!

feeding time is 1:30, got to get there a little early to ride in the truck on the feed lot.  There are some elk there, but not a lot.  A few good bulls, but for the most part the majority of the elk and especially the big bulls are still up in the mtns.

You probably saw my other thread.
http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,43520.0.html

Last week there were about 800 elk. A friend counted 67 bulls and more came in. There is a list to sign up for rides and maybe sign a release. It filled up fairly quick the day I was there. They also take donations.  The old army truck drives out a couple hundred yards and parks for awhile.
It is good to see things sort out when they feed but I see much more before hand.

Thanks for the information guys! I think I will be making the trip. I used to live in the Wenas area when I was younger so Im gonna take the younger ones up that way and show them where I grew up.

One more question, hows the crowd at the feeding station on a Saturday?

Gonna start seeing quite alot more folks over there on the weekend from now until they head back up the hill. During the week is the best.

Its packed on the weekend, and even quite busy during peek times during the week.    With all of the bare hills I wonder how much longer they'll actually feed them.  Not even sure why they are feeding them really

This is why they are feeding them, advertisement. Some may never believe there are elk if it weren't for the feed stations. Some years they feed to get rid of old hay. It also keeps each generation conditioned to come back.
