Using dogs for deer hunting...no it's not what you think.

I don't have her any longer as we had to put her down but my Red Nose Pit, Aurora was the BEST deer hunter I've ever been with. If we were driving into a spot to set up a blind or go for a walk about I'd always take her along for the ride. One, she loved to ride shotgun and watch and two, the dog could SMELL deer real well. I mean like right now! All I  had to do was tell  her we were WATCHING for deer and man she was at it like no buddies business. I'd watch her for a reaction and sure enough each and every time that she'd pop up into the alert position we'd see a deer with in a few minutes. I never took a road hunting shot so it never panned out but that dog could smell deer a long ways off.

Now, IF you have one in a vehicle or ORV and it's not allowed to run the critters but it can smell them and you know what to look for in the dog's reaction is that cheating? I know it's not violating, already checked.

That is interesting I never thought of that.  We used to take our dogs with us when we would go hunting.  We didnt hunt with them but they were great around camp and they would stay in the back of the truck while driving around.  We just stopped taking them because we couldnt leave them in camp or the truck all day.

I thought I read in the regs that you could not have a dog with you in the truck while deer hunting?  :dunno:

I have a pit that is deer crazy as well.  Not in the chase them through the woods, blood thirsty way people think when they think pits.  She looks for deer when we drive through the woods and gets excited when she sees them.  She also smells them like crazy.....at least at the house.  If i have a deer hanging she knows and wants to check it out....and get a couple chunks of meat and maybe a bone if im feeling nice. Ive been trying to teach her to find sheds.....shes good around the house but no luck in the woods
