In the bush(Raw vs jpeg)

Well he is in the bush and VERY interested about getting in the bush so to speak.......

I am playing with the toys, and also with a program my mom got me for a gift.  I shot one in Raw and two without.  The interesting thing is what you can do with the Raw. I am going to enjoy dinking with this.  The originals are all way over exposed.

Besides exposure, you can go back and play with the white balance, saturation, color balance, etc. 

Brush is tough to shoot in.  It is usually too distracting to get any decent pictures out of.  Sometimes if you have an F2.8 you can blur it enough.  I took a shot of a moose in Grand Tetons a few years back where I was able to get a useable shot in the brush.  I'll post him tonight when I get a chance.

I got to watch him and another ram slam heads.  Seems like it isn't the season, but this ewe was sure hot.  I'll try to get the other ram on here soon. 

This was with the 400mm with a 2x, off of a tripod sort of.  Terrain was such that it was on two legs at the time.

So tell us is shooting in RAW better than JPEG? Can you print pictures in RAW? Would your final product be better if you have photo shop instead of free crap like I use?

jpeg is easier.  Raw is ultimately better for tweeking.  I don't do much tweeking, but having fun playing.  I am using a new program my mother bought me called Photshop Elements 6.  I wasn't sure if it processed RAW or not, but apparantly it does.  HEY it was free. $100 at Bestbuy.   I was eyeballing Photoshop CS3, or whatever, but thats $600 bucks.  I'll see how this works.  Most of my photos have been in automode, time to break out of the box I guess.

Here's the brushy photo I was referring to earlier.  I can't remember taking a more brush photo than this one.  F2.8 helped.  I remember standing on the top of my car to get this photo. 

Regarding raw vs. jpg.  If you are skilled at photoshop you can do a lot of the adjustments you can do with a raw photo with a jpg.  However, doing adjustments such as exposure and such is much easier and better quality with raw.  What use to take me a lot of time with a jpg takes only a few seconds to adjust in raw.  If you are shooting a camera that has raw...you have raw software.  All the brands provide raw conversion software with the camera.
