Kid Hunt

Hey guys we are back at it again...and I have a kid I really want to take out turkey hunting...Now heres the problem I'm not a real big turkey hunter and all the spots I know of are public or already have guys going to them...does anyone want to help me out and get this kid a turkey? if so P/M me ...Thanks fellas

P.S it will be April 3rd and 4th...youth turkey

Riley, first, a couple things you need to give a little thought to. First, "get this kid a bird" is secondary to "a kid I want to take out turkey hunting". Focus on the hunt and the time you'll spend outdoors with your son. Scouting for turkeys is a huge part of turkey hunting, for that matter all hunting, and can be as much fun as the actual "getting the kid a bird". Most of us face the challenge of public ground hunting and other hunters...it's just the way things are and I simply don't believe every place you know is going to have a hunter already perched out there blocking your access or hunting opportunity. Just get the boy in the truck the weekend before the hunt, drive out there, find some birds and plan your hunt. If your looking for someone to PM you and say come on over, I got a couple turkeys all penned up...it just ain't going to happen...and even if it did, that's not hunting and you'd be missing out on the actual "a kid I want to take out turkey hunting"

My son is 13 and as much as he enjoys waterfowl hunting and a little grouse getting he lives for TURKEY he has hunted a spring season a youth season and a spring season.....last spring he said he actually called in some hens all on his own...so in his opinion he is getting closer. we lost our contact info for the private land they hunted last spring  damn thieves.....anyway...he really wants to get out this spring and we are not sure how that is going to work but he thinks this might be his year

oh and he has managed to find some sign of easterns near our house he even spotted a hen she was not anywhere that he could hunt but they are out there......I found a small group of gobblers as well but again wasn't in a good spot to hunt

Living in Walla-Walla, you should be able to find birds nearby, I saw a large tom last year while driving through Touchet, just get out now and scout.
If you ask permission for him to hunt, I am sure someone will let you...

So what kind of shotgun are you toting for turkeys? 12, 16, 20 gauge? Not sure what would be best, never hunted turkey but my boy wants to.

Any of thos would be fine, most guyus use 12ga, and lot of times our youngsters runa 20, but if he can handle a 12 go with it. The 12/20ga are going to be the two that you'll find the most variety of turkey loads, get out there now witha few different loads, 4,5,&6's are the legal sizs for turkey, each gun will take a load differently so you want a good tight pattern out to your self imposed max range, usually 40 yards for most. At the farthest ranges your looking to get 15-20 pellets in the head/neck area. which is about the size of your fist and forearm. Also be wary at close range to see how much off center your shot is, because with tighter loads you really want to aim a turkey gun more like a rifle than a wing shot. Hope this helps.
