WDFW seeks public input on Draft North Olympic
Wildlife Area Management Plan

OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is soliciting public input on a draft North Olympic Wildlife Area Management Plan (NOWA), which encompasses 1,800 acres on the Olympic Peninsula. Written comments will be accepted through April 15, 2010.

“This plan will form the basis for future operations, management and budgeting decisions on these lands,” said Lauri Vigue, a WDFW environmental planner. “It will be updated annually to address changing conditions and issues.”

The plan, which was developed with the help of a local citizen advisory group, is posted on the WDFW website at: http://wdfw.wa.gov/lands/wildlife_areas/management_plans/. It’s the first plan exclusively for the northern part of the Peninsula since it was split off from the southern half of the Peninsula and Puget Sound last year.

Comments may be submitted by completing the online feedback form at the WDFW website http://wdfw.wa.gov/lands/wildlife_areas/management_plans/plan_review.html or by writing the WDFW, Attn: Wildlife Program/North Olympic Wildlife Area Management Plan Comments, 600 Capitol Way North, Olympia, WA 98501-1091.

WDFW manages more than 850,000 acres of land around the state for fish and wildlife, habitat conservation and wildlife-related recreation. The land is divided into 32 wildlife management areas.

The North Olympic Wildlife Area includes parcels of land from west of Port Angeles to the Quilcene area of the North Olympic Peninsula. The land is owned and/or managed by the agency. The separate units include: Elwha, Morse Creek, Lower Dungeness, Dungeness, Bell Creek, South Sequim Bay, Zella Schultz (Protection Island), Snow/Salmon Creek, Chimacum and Tarboo.
