7x57 Mauser
« on: April 09, 2010, 05:49:42 PM »
So I'm the proud new owner of an unfired Ruger m77  in 7x57 mauser. I will pick it up on monday. If there ever was a caliber I couldn't possibly know anything  less about, this is it. I was told it's a great caliber and I've been doing some reading on it a little and it seems like it is a good one. If anybody's got any input on it or suggestions for replacing the skeleton or "boat paddle" stock it's got on it I'm all ears. It seemed to be a good deal so I jumped on it.

Thanks

I have one in a mauser.  IMR 4831 and 160 gr. bullets work pretty good for me.  Ballistically I'd say it is under the .280 Remington.  Similar to comparing the .308 to the .30-06.  The 7x57 loaded to 45,000 to 50,000 psi is a great medium game cartridge at medium ranges.

7x57 is in the ballpark of the 7mm-08, the only "drawback" is that it won't fit a short action(if you're one of those picky types).  the upside is that once you get into the heavier bullets(160gr and up) it'll sling them better than the 7-08.  factory ammo seems a little limited.

Great choice!    An excellent round that has proven its self all over the world.  If you google the cartridge you can find stories of it being used in Africa on elephants.  Now I am not saying that I would use it for that, but it is a good cartridge for any thing you might need to shoot on this continent.

There's a reason they call it hunting, not killing.

I have a Mauser being built in the same caliber that should be finished this summer.  Handloading will maximize it's potential with a great bullet selection out there.  Should be good for any critter on this continent except for big bears though plenty of elephant have fallen to it.

Exactly what I would have said.
Factory ammo is 'downloaded' for safety with older actions with weaker metallurgy.
You can load longer bullets than the '08 casing.
Enjoy....it's a classic on the lines of 30-06.

Being a Ruger action, you can really wring out some good hand loads with that round.  As for the boat paddle stock, just google some Ruger replacements, and you should come up with a lot of alternatives.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

tis a really sweet round in those actions that are the right length for it. the good news for you is there is no excuse to not be able to load long bullets out to the lands....there is plenty of real estate in the mag.

Well I got the rifle today...
Nice rifle, pretty much brand new. Must have a new stock for it...really don't like the skeleton stock. Also got a nice scope with it.

find yourself a ruger m77 ultralight factory stock.  probably the classiest looking one they make, and you can probably get one for relatively cheap.
