New to hunting Cayotes
« on: February 18, 2008, 06:38:12 AM »
Hey guys,
I just got invited to plink some yotes south of spokane for a work friend off thier property! I'm really excited since I didn't get to shot ANYTHING all of fall. Picked-up a dirt cheap Marlin .223 from good ole' Cabelas lastnight and i'm just ready! So let me get this right... Spotlighting IS legal during koon and cat season which will end on 15 March right? If so, what do you all do? just call em' and spot? Can they see the spot? Any advice is appreciated. But don't flame me... just tring to learn

First of all, make sure your gun shoots straight, preferably not on th e property you are going to hunt.  A coyote is a pretty small target out there at 300 yards, especially when you take all the fur off.  I've never spotlighted, so I hunt during daylight hours and call them in.

First thing you do is call me up and we will set up a time to go out.

You are good to spotlight, you just can't do it from your vehicle which makes it a pretty big pain in the butt.  I was out this past weekend near Spangle and Cheney and the walking is tough.  I made three stands when I would normally make six or seven.  If you have snow shoes get them out.  This time of year they are usually paired up and wandering around at all times of the day.  If your buddy does not hunt them, you should be able to bring them in with calling.

You can spot light from a vehicle, but you are not supposed to shoot from that vehicle or road.  Depending on the location (private, non maintained roads)  you could even shoot from the road.  I would suggest calling them in as spotlighting works, but they take off really fast and are hard to see for a good shot.  I would go any place on the outskirts of town and go towards the edges.  I know you could call one or more in up on the South Hill, Valley, or up north.  Around Cheney and 395 South, 2 West, there are coyotes all over.  I would set up where you can see with some cover, and call them across the semi open terrain.  Target mainly brushy draws and sage flats.  Coyotes will be in open field country, but that is usually when they are travellinig.  Like anything they prefer a little cover if possible.  Do not move and camo up they will nail a callers location from a mile away and come right to it.  That is not with continual calling, but they can just nail right where the call came from.  Give them some time and wait a while after you think there is nothing.  Also bring some bino's.  When you get up get up slowly and scan all around.  They will hold up at times pretty close just waiting for some movement to attack or run from.  If you can use some sort of decoy or distractor it will help.  The biggest thing I have found is to actually sneak into your hunting area, not just walk right in and start calling.  For me I have better success if I sneak in and then wait 10-15 then start calling.

dbllunger - There is a problem with spotlighting from a vehicle and not having a shooter in the same location.  The shooter can't see the eyes.  You want to have the shooter and spotlighter as close together as possible.

Thanks ALOT! You guys rock! The land owners have never been into hunting so that'll be a good thing since the dogs aren't educated. Also, they don't want them cause the owners breed small hot-dog type dogs?!?! and the yotes taunt them and call them in for a meal
