What kind of calls do you use?
« on: April 18, 2010, 10:36:03 PM »
I was just wondering what kind of calls (Slate, Box, Mouth) and the brand of the call everone is using? I have a slate with 3 different strikers and 4 different mouth calls. I am not good enough yet with the mouth calls to use them out in the woods so iv just been using the slate.

Two slate calls with two strikers, mouth calls, wingbone and a box call.  Sometimes I'll use em all at a set, but generally early in the season I like my Lil Duece slate call with an acrylic striker.  Windy days I like to start em off with my Ashby box call.   Later in the season I have a little skoal can slate call with a corn cob striker that has lured in many a call shy gobbler because it is soft and suttle, like a real hen.

I use mostly mouth calls, Primos, and HS Strut.  I also pack a slate and a box just in case.

Mouth calls are HS strut, Primos and Ray Eye, use them all when needed but use my Glass over Alluminum double and checkered box calls most the time both by Rut N Strut Game calls. The Box call brought in two Toms to my Brother inlaw :IBCOOL:

I use mostly Primos calls.  For pot calls, I use the Freak w/ crystal, Old Glory with Frictionite, and a New Moon Game Calls crystal along with many different strikers.  Box calls, I use the Lil Hearbreaker and a Box Cutter.  Mouth calls, I really like the Primos double reed sonic dome mini's.  The only call I used to bring in my buddy's tom was the Freak.  I really like this call since you can strap it to your leg.

I use pots, diaphragms, and a wingbone.  I like custom pot calls with a variety of strikers.  I like the pots with multiple holes drilled in them so you can dampen the sound.  I also like a pot that will give me a good break when yelping.  I don't currently carry a box call because they are bulky and I have enough crap to pack, especially with a camera.

A couple pot calls and a few diaphrams.  Got tired of packing around the whole arsenal.  If I'm headed a long ways into canyon country I will pack the box call for locating only.  IMO, if the tom is willing, any call will work, and if they're all twisted up, then no call will work.  Diversity is good though.

I have to mildly disagree with you.  Several times over the past I have used several different calls and got no response.  Then I'll try a call and wham, I'll get a response.  Try one or two of the other calls and nothing.  Go back to the call I got a response and I'll get another response.  I have had gobblers ignore three or four different calls, but repsond to one particular call.  Most of the time I think your right on the money, but I've had enough of these encounters over the years to carry the arsenal and try them all if I'm not getting any feedback.

I won't disagree Machias.  All calls are in the truck, but I will play my odds with the two pots and multiple strickers when deep in the woods.
